A serious incident occurred on Water Street, Liverpool city center, leaving 47 people injured, including 4 children.

Police quickly arrested the 53-year-old man who drove the car into the crowd, knocking some onto the hood and crushing at least four others.

Daniel Jones - standing a few metres away shared on The Sun: " I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a horrifying scene that scared many people.

The medical staff knelt down to give first aid and treat the injured. Luckily, my wife had just arrived at the hotel with our 3-year-old son."

Witness Hayley said: "It was shocking and sad. The car suddenly spun out of control and I heard people screaming. Most people thought it was a terrorist attack.

We don't know how that van got onto Water Street. He hit the gas and drove full speed into the crowd. People rolled out and got run over. I'd say it knocked down about 40 people."

Natasha Rinaldi, who watched the parade from her hotel room, told Sky News: " There was a loud noise and everyone was panicking. I looked out the window and saw the car had run over a lot of people.

Some ran after the driver and tried to break the glass. The police did everything they could to stop and push people away. At that time I was very confused and just heard screaming."

Chelsea Yuen, who was walking with her friend and young daughter, was lucky to avoid the car. She said: "The road was packed. We were packed like sardines down the street and then we heard beeping and people screaming.

When we looked up, a car was coming towards us at about 50 km/h. My friend and I immediately jumped out of the way and pulled our little daughter along. The situation happened extremely quickly."
