BHG - Effectively implementing the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, Niem Son Commune (Meo Vac) is gradually creating sustainable livelihoods for people through livestock models, typically the fattening cow model.

In order to diversify livelihoods, promote socio-economic development and achieve sustainable poverty reduction, Niem Son commune has implemented Project 2 in the National Target Program with 6 specific models: 1 project on raising goats for breeding in Ngam Cach village and 5 projects on raising fattening cows in Nam Chuay, Na Giao, Khuoi Luong, Niem Dong and Ban Tai villages. The total implementation cost is 1,650 million VND. Of which, the State budget supports over 1,571 million VND; the local budget matches over 78 million VND, directly supporting 63 poor and near-poor households.

Ms. Tho Mi The, Ban Tai village, shared: “My family is a near-poor household, and has long wanted to raise cows to improve income but did not have enough economic conditions. Thanks to the project, in August 2024, I was supported to buy 3 cows worth 48 million VND, of which the family contributed 13.35 million VND. One of the supported cows gave birth to a calf nearly 4 months old; my family is taking advantage of natural grass and available grass land to fatten the herd to sell to the market to repay the State's capital and have additional income."

Similarly, Mr. Sung Mi My, Niem Dong village, said: “My family received 32 million VND in support to buy 2 cows. After receiving the cows, we were instructed by the commune's professional staff on how to care for them and prevent and control diseases. Currently, both cows are healthy, one is expected to give birth in July, the other in August. I hope this model will help my family have a more stable direction.”

Chairman of the People's Committee of Niem Son Commune, Ha Van Thanh, said: Determining the effective implementation of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction is one of the key tasks for the period 2021 - 2025. Not only providing capital support, the commune also pays special attention to propaganda and technical guidance; mobilizing the participation of the entire political system to inspect, supervise, and ensure that capital reaches the right subjects and is used for the right purposes. To improve efficiency, the commune regularly reviews households eligible to participate in the model, organizes periodic progress assessments; promptly detects and handles cases of taking advantage of policy capital. Thereby, not only creating livelihoods for people but also gradually changing production thinking, improving the lives of people in ethnic minority areas.
