Japan will significantly increase visa issuance and renewal fees for foreigners from the next fiscal year, and use the extra budget to strengthen policies promoting a multicultural society, according to government sources.
The new fee is expected to increase sharply compared to the current fee, when the fee for changing residence status or reissuing a visa with a validity of one year or more could increase by about 40,000 yen (nearly 7 million VND) compared to the current 6,000 yen (more than 1 million VND). Notably, the fee for applying for permanent residence could exceed 100,000 yen (nearly 17 million VND), compared to the current 10,000 yen (nearly 1.7 million VND).
The government said the new fees would be adjusted to be in line with those in many Western countries. A bill to amend the Immigration Control Law – which currently caps visa fees at 10,000 yen – is likely to be submitted to the Diet during its annual session next year.
Earlier in April, the Immigration Services Agency increased visa issuance fees due to inflation, from 4,000 to 6,000 yen for renewal or change of residence status, and from 8,000 to 10,000 yen for permanent resident visas.
According to the agency's data, by the end of June, the number of foreign residents in Japan reached a record 3,956,619 people, reflecting a continuous increasing trend in recent years.
