As the host of the campaign for many years, in 2023, within the framework of the National Program on Energy Efficiency and Conservation for the 2019-2030 period (VNEEP3), the Ministry of Industry and Trade continues to launch a response to the Earth Hour Campaign to spread the spirit of joining hands to save energy and protect the environment to the entire community.
Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu - Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Saving and Sustainable Development, Deputy Chief of Office of the Steering Committee for Energy Saving (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said: “The message of this year's Earth Hour Campaign is "Saving electricity - making it a habit". This is also the message of the Electricity Saving Program for the period 2020 - 2025 implementing Directive 20 on enhancing electricity saving for the period 2020 - 2025 of the Prime Minister . With this message, we hope that all people, communities and businesses nationwide will join hands to protect the environment, save energy, save electricity, towards a green future, towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 according to Vietnam's commitment at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change".
Since the end of February, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has simultaneously deployed activities in response to the Earth Hour Campaign 2023. Accordingly, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has built a communication identity with the message "Saving electricity - becoming a habit". The message sent to the community is not only about saving electricity, saving energy and protecting the environment in just one hour, but every individual, community and business must practice it regularly throughout 365 days of the year, so that saving electricity and saving energy becomes a habit.
Previously, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued a document requesting the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities and Vietnam Electricity Group to organize communication activities in response to Earth Hour taking place in March to attract the attention of many organizations, agencies and people in the provinces and cities to participate in the campaign; mobilizing organizations, agencies and people to turn off lights and unnecessary equipment during the event to turn off lights in response to Earth Hour.
The Organizing Committee said that within the framework of the Earth Hour 2023 campaign, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will organize a Run in response to the Earth Hour campaign with the participation of more than 1,000 professional and amateur athletes. The Run will take place on the morning of Saturday, March 18 at Dinh Tien Hoang walking street, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi .
In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will also organize the first online contest to learn about Earth Hour. The contest will be deployed online on the website of the National Program on Energy Saving and Efficiency (https://tietkiemnangluong.com.vn/). With simple gameplay, useful information and dozens of valuable gifts, the contest promises to bring many interesting experiences to players.
In particular, the Lights Out action in response to the campaign will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, March 25 across the country.
In parallel, communication activities in response to the Earth Hour Campaign will also be enhanced on the information channels of the VNEEP Program, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Vietnam Electricity Group.
After 13 years of implementing Earth Hour, up to now in Vietnam, more and more organizations, businesses and unions have participated in responding to the campaign such as: organizing communication, propaganda, signing voluntary agreements on environmental protection, energy saving, waste reduction...
Initiated in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Hour has now become an international event with more than 190 countries and territories participating. The campaign calls on households and businesses to turn off lights and electrical equipment that do not significantly affect daily life for 60 minutes (from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time on the last Saturday of March every year).
In 2009, Vietnam responded to the Earth Hour campaign for the first time with the participation of 6 provinces and cities: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Hoi An, Hue and Nha Trang. Up to now, after 14 years of organization, the campaign has created positive changes in the community regarding the awareness of the meaning and benefits of saving energy, protecting the environment and responding to climate change.
In 2022, after 1 hour of turning off the lights to respond to the Earth Hour campaign (from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 26), Vietnam saved 309,000 kWh of electricity (equivalent to about 576.1 million VND).
Within the framework of the Earth Hour 2023 Campaign, the Earth Hour 2023 Running Race will take place on the morning of Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Hoan Kiem Lake walking street, Hanoi with a route of 5 km (equivalent to 3 laps around Hoan Kiem Lake).
With the message "Saving electricity - Making it a habit", the Run aims to call on offices, businesses and households to use energy economically and efficiently, gradually forming the habit of saving electricity, aiming for the goal of energy balance by 2050 according to the commitment of the Vietnamese Government at the COP 26 Global Climate Summit. At the same time, the event is an activity in a series of activities responding to the Earth Hour Campaign 2023 in Vietnam.
It is expected that more than 1,000 professional and amateur athletes from state management agencies, businesses and running clubs as well as a large number of people will participate in the race.
Earth Hour 2023 will take place with the ritual of turning off the lights for 1 hour from 20:30 to 21:30, Saturday, March 25, 2023. With the symbol of 60+, the message of Earth Hour sent to the community is not only to save electricity, save energy and protect the environment for one hour, but we must practice it regularly throughout 365 days of the year.
