Kien Giang Many of the 87 students in Rach Gia who were hospitalized with severe hypotension due to food poisoning are now in stable health.
Doctor Danh Ty, Deputy Director of Kien Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said the above on the afternoon of November 16, adding that fortunately the children received timely emergency care. "There have been no cases of severe progression of the disease so far," said Doctor Ty.
By the afternoon of November 16, 63 students had been discharged from the hospital, while 14 were still being treated for diarrhea. The remaining students with mild poisoning symptoms were being monitored at home.
These children, who study at Tran Van On, Mac Dinh Chi and Le Van Tam primary schools, were admitted to the hospital yesterday afternoon with symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting and low blood pressure. These symptoms occurred after they ate lunch at school consisting of white rice, sour soup (cabbage, okra, pineapple, fish cake), braised pork and jackfruit for dessert. Three hours later, they had a snack of fresh noodles cooked with vegetables.
The Food Safety Department has taken 10 food samples to test for the cause of the poisoning, with results expected next week.

The unit providing meals for the three schools mentioned above is Cat Tuong cooking facility.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Linh, Vice Chairwoman of Rach Gia City People's Committee, said that two months ago, Cat Tuong cooking establishment was inspected for compliance with food safety regulations. The authorities discovered that this establishment violated regulations such as not keeping food samples, not entering input food information books, and lacking labor protection equipment.
As soon as a series of students were hospitalized, city leaders asked schools to end their meal supply contracts with Cat Tuong and ordered a surprise inspection of the facility.
