In the 2024-2025 school year, Hanoi will have 133,000 students taking the graduation exam, an increase of nearly 4,000 students compared to the previous school year.

According to the decision to assign enrollment targets for grade 1 to public high schools by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, 117 non-specialized public high schools will enroll 71,000 students, an increase of about 1,500 compared to last year.

Thus, although the enrollment quota for grade 10 has been increased this school year, compared to the number of candidates taking the exam this year, the race to enter grade 10 of public high schools this school year will still be more stressful than last year.

According to statistics from the 10th grade enrollment quota table announced by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, some schools increased their quotas, such as high schools: Pham Hong Thai, Tay Ho, Ngoc Hoi, Trung Van, Khuong Ha... increased from 40-135 quotas.

On the contrary, many hot schools in the inner city area - the hot spot for 10th grade enrollment - have sharply reduced their quotas. If we count by area, in Ha Dong district, all 3 public schools, Le Quy Don High School, Quang Trung High School, and Tran Hung Dao High School, have reduced their quotas from 765 to 675.

In Hoang Mai, Bac Tu Liem and Cau Giay districts, high schools: Truong Dinh, Hoang Van Thu, Vietnam Poland, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Xuan Dinh, Cau Giay, Yen Hoa all reduced their quota from 720 to 675.

In Hoan Kiem district, the quota of Tran Phu High School decreased from 765 to 675. In Tay Ho district, the quota of Tay Ho High School decreased from 720 to 675.

At this time, the registration of wishes for grade 10 public high schools for the 2024-2025 school year has been completed. According to regulations, once the registration form has been submitted, students are not allowed to change their wishes.

Therefore, the fact that many public high schools have reduced their enrollment quotas for grade 10 has made many students and parents worried. Many opinions say that with schools reducing enrollment quotas, the “competition” rate will increase.

Ms. Nguyen Hoai Phuong's family has a child studying in grade 9 at Chu Van An Secondary School (Tay Ho District) and planned to choose Tay Ho High School as their first choice. However, after the Department of Education and Training announced the enrollment quota, this school reduced its enrollment quota by 45 students, so Ms. Phuong and her daughter decided to choose Nguyen Trai High School - Ba Dinh as their first choice with an increased quota of 35 students.

“Although Nguyen Trai High School had a higher admission score last year than Tay Ho High School, my family took a risk and chose this school because of the increased quota, hoping that my child’s chances of getting into a public school would be higher. I am nervously waiting for the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to announce the “competition” ratio for each school,” said Ms. Phuong.

The number of students applying to high schools will be one of the important factors determining the competition ratio and admission scores of schools in the future.

According to the plan, on May 15, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will announce the number of candidates applying to each high school for the 2024-2025 school year. It is predicted that public high schools, especially those in inner-city areas, will still have a high competition rate.

The 2024 entrance exam for non-specialized public high schools in Hanoi will be held over 2 days from June 8-9, with 3 subjects: Math, Literature, and Foreign Language.

Regarding the scope of the exam, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said that the exam includes questions according to the standard knowledge and skills requirements of the current secondary school program of the Ministry of Education and Training, mainly in the 9th grade program.

The Math and Literature exams ensure 4 levels of cognition: Recognition, comprehension, application and high-level application. The Foreign Language exam is mainly at the recognition and comprehension levels and some questions are at the application level.

“The level of knowledge and skills required for the exam will be streamlined to suit the time, ensuring compliance with the instructions for adjusting teaching content in the directive documents of the Ministry of Education and Training. Therefore, students can rest assured to study and practice according to the instructions of teachers and the content in the program they are learning,” Mr. Cuong informed.
