On November 20, the Institute of Nutrition ( Ministry of Health ) organized the 2025 Nutrition-Food Science Conference, where experts warned that many unbalanced eating habits are directly affecting the health of Vietnamese people.
Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Trong Hung, Director of the Center for Nutritional Counseling, Rehabilitation and Obesity Control (Nutrition Institute) shared that when sitting for nutritional consultation, there is a noteworthy fact that everyone needs to change. Meals are shifting, that is, people are afraid of rice, so they eat very little, only about 1/2 to 2/3 bowl per meal, but eat a lot of meat, a lot of protein, oil seeds, a lot of fruit...
However, this is a very incorrect understanding. Daily meals still have to include enough types of food according to recommendations, in which starch still has to account for about 50% of the energy intake, even people with diabetes without complications still maintain this minimum level.
Therefore, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung, we should not "blame" rice for causing overweight, obesity, and diabetes. Each person needs to calculate the total amount of food intake and adjust the way of eating accordingly.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Duong, Director of the Institute of Nutrition, said that with the current characteristics of our country still dealing with the "double burden" of nutrition, we still have to maintain fullness (to reduce malnutrition) and delicious food (to maintain proper nutrition). In addition, "eating to enjoy" has also appeared, when dishes must have attractive colors and flavors.
With 7 separate nutrition pyramids just announced for each citizen to use as a basis for implementing proper nutrition. Each nutrition pyramid is designed for each age group and specific subject, aiming to improve stature, develop intelligence and prevent non-communicable diseases. Food groups are converted into age-appropriate food units, illustrated with spoons, bowls, slices of cake and cups.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Duong said that the construction and promulgation of the nutrition pyramid is a solution to implement Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo on a number of breakthrough solutions to strengthen the protection, care and improvement of people's health, which clearly stated: Nutrition in disease prevention must be focused on throughout the life cycle, according to each age, stage of development, health status, ensuring a balance in diet, nutritional composition, meal quality, suitable to the physical condition, culture and economic conditions of Vietnamese people.

Currently, the average life expectancy of Vietnamese people is 74.7 years old, but the number of healthy years is still low. Each elderly person usually has about three chronic diseases, mainly related to improper nutrition. In particular, the habit of eating too much sugar, salt and unhealthy foods increases the risk of obesity, metabolic disorders and kidney disease...
To improve the state of inadequate nutrition, experts say it is necessary to synchronously deploy solutions, from enhancing nutrition education to applying national nutrition policies; and building appropriate diets for each region.
