Large specialized areas, stable production
Nguyen Luong Bang Commune currently has more than 160 hectares of herbs, one of the major concentrated production areas in the western part of the city. For many years, the locality has maintained a specialized model and technical processes suitable for each type of crop, helping to stabilize output.
The main spice vegetable here is green onion, accounting for more than 70% of the total area. In recent years, farmers in Nguyen Luong Bang commune have invested in buying iron bars and plastic to cover the area to avoid the effects of weather, especially showers that will damage the onions. Thanks to this method, green onions grow evenly, giving higher yields. Also due to suitable soil combined with experienced farmers, the quality of green onions grown here is highly appreciated by traders.
It takes only about 2 months to harvest green onions. This year, the selling price at the field has increased sharply, reaching 20,000 - 23,000 VND/kg, while before it was only about 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg. In addition, other herbs are also priced well, coriander 30,000 VND/kg, dill about 50,000 VND/kg, mustard 12,000 - 13,000 VND/kg, all doubled compared to before.
Mr. Vu Viet Khang, Director of Pham Kha Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: Vegetable prices have increased sharply partly because many provinces and cities in the Central and Northern regions have been affected by storms and floods, causing damage to vegetable growing areas, leading to a decrease in supply. Meanwhile, local output remains stable, so farmers "have a good season and good prices". Many households' income this crop has increased by 15-20% compared to the same period last year. The average production value of the spice vegetable area in Nguyen Luong Bang commune is from 400-450 million VND/ha/year.
Not only Nguyen Luong Bang commune, Gia Phuc, Nguyen Giap communes and many other traditional vegetable growing areas of Hai Phong are entering the harvest season under favorable conditions. In Gia Phuc commune, kohlrabi plants give a stable yield. Ms. Nguyen Thi Mau, a long-time vegetable grower, said: "This year the weather is favorable, there are few pests and diseases, and the price is higher for traders, so people are very excited. This crop, each sao of kohlrabi brings in a profit of about 10 million VND, about 2 million VND higher than last year."
In Nguyen Giap commune, cucumbers - a familiar crop - bring good income to farmers. According to Mr. Bui Huu Thang, representative of Nguyen Giap Agricultural Service Cooperative, the revenue of each sao of cucumber is from 15 - 16 million VND/sao. After deducting costs, farmers earn about 12 - 13 million VND/sao. Along with cucumbers, tomatoes and chili peppers all have high productivity and good selling prices. Currently, farmers in Nguyen Giap commune are selling tomatoes in the field at prices from 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, while normally they only fluctuate from 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg. Chili prices fluctuate from 35,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, double the previous price. With an area of 25 hectares of chili peppers and 10 hectares of tomatoes, many households in Nguyen Giap commune expect to achieve the highest profit in many recent crops.
Continue to invest and promote strengths
According to traders at Dong Ngo Quyen, Dam Trieu, An Da markets... the increase in vegetable prices since the beginning of November is a common phenomenon due to the off-season. However, this year the increase is stronger and lasts longer because many growing areas in some other localities have been affected by natural disasters, causing a significant decrease in supply. However, thanks to the large specialized farming system, Hai Phong does not fall into a shortage of goods, as cooperatives and traders maintain a steady supply.
A bumper crop of vegetables at the right time when prices are rising has helped many households make big profits. This is also a condition for farmers to reinvest, expand their acreage or upgrade irrigation systems, greenhouses, net houses, increase productivity and reduce risks in the following crops. Localities also encourage farmers to switch to suitable crop varieties, apply sustainable farming techniques, use fertilizers properly and proactively prevent pests and diseases, ensuring quality to meet market demand. In the 2025-2026 winter crop, Hai Phong will plant about 29,000 hectares of various vegetables. Proactively scheduling crops and expanding the area of short-term vegetable cultivation are considered important solutions to ensure supply-demand balance in the city.
The high economic efficiency of Hai Phong vegetable growing areas at this time is the result of concentrated production organization, application of reasonable farming techniques and proactive seasonality. This is the basis for Hai Phong to continue promoting its agricultural strengths, modern and sustainable production and increasing farmers' income in the coming years.
