Preschool children during a playtime in the literature corner. Through games, children learn how to wait their turn, not fight, not push their friends...
At a recent training session organized by the PreschoolEducation Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, to guide managers and preschool teachers in organizing nutrition education activities, teaching preschool children about health, safety, etc., there were many noteworthy messages for teachers and parents.
In a professional lecture, Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan Trang, a specialist from the Preschool Education Department, said that the goal of caring for, nurturing, and educating preschool children is to help children develop comprehensively in terms of physical, emotional, intellectual, and aesthetic aspects, forming the first elements of personality, and preparing children for first grade.
Many parents think that there are lessons that do not need to be taught to children, because "children don't know anything", "when they grow up they will know". In reality, this is not the case. A child needs to be educated from school, family, society, from the smallest things.
Regarding nutrition education at preschool age, children need to be taught how to name foods; children need to understand the nutritional value of the foods they eat every day; and know which foods are not good for their health.
In terms of hygiene and disease prevention education, children need to be taught the process of washing hands, wiping their face, brushing their teeth, and daily hygiene skills, and they must be disciplined in doing so. In health education, children need to be taught how to express their feelings, express their feelings to teachers, and tell teachers about their condition, such as "I'm tired", "I have a fever", etc.
Children play in the role-playing corner. For preschoolers, each game brings many lessons.
In particular, children need to be taught safety lessons from preschool age. Preschool children need to be taught to recognize unsafe risks at home as well as at school. These are sharp objects that can injure children. These are animals and plants that can be dangerous to children such as dogs, cats, insects, thorny flowers, spoiled food, etc. Dangerous places such as stairs, elevators, railings; actions that endanger children such as climbing, throwing things at friends, acts of being abused or assaulted by others.
At the same time, according to education managers, children need to be taught what to do in emergency situations such as when they (or a friend) are injured, lost, in a fire, in a natural disaster, etc., who to call for help, and emergency hotlines to remember. Children need to be taught lessons on how to seek help and tell adults about the dangers they are facing.
"There are very important small lessons that need to be taught to children from preschool age, such as teaching them safety rules when playing, knowing how to wait their turn, not pushing their friends, not taking turns, not running too fast... Parents should not think that 'children do not need to be taught, they will know when they grow up'," said Ms. Doan Trang.
Parents should not have the concept "you don't need to teach when you are young, you will know when you grow up"
Games are considered an effective means of education for preschool children, but games are also selected with clear goals and educational value. To teach children the above lessons about nutrition, health and safety, teachers can talk to children during pick-up time or when waiting for parents to pick them up; can be integrated into learning activities, play activities; experience hypothetical situations or available situations...
Notably, parents, young parents do not stand on the sidelines in the journey of educating children. Because parents are also their children's teachers at home, they need to teach and let their children practice many lessons regularly. Through the open school model, many schools in Ho Chi Minh City have recently invited parents to class, observe and take care of children in kindergarten, thereby gaining more knowledge and skills in caring for and educating children.
