Recently, plagiarism has become a "hot" issue in Kpop, after the internal conflict between HYBE Group and its subsidiary ADOR broke out. CEO Min Hee Jin publicly criticized ILLIT for plagiarizing NewJeans in many aspects of ideas, images... From here, there have been continuous controversies about the issue of plagiarism being discussed.
On social media X is debating about an upcoming girl group from Big Planet Made, called BADVILLAIN.
BADVILLAIN is scheduled to debut in June and has already released videos and images revealing the lineup of members. But right from the opening introduction video released in April, netizens commented that this BADVILLAIN video has similarities with the first introduction poster of Baby Monster revealed in January 2023.
Both groups use a black silhouette on a red background to reveal the number of members. BADVILLAIN's logo was criticized for referencing the ideas of Baby Monster and G-Dragon (who were both artists under YG Entertainment).
Some viewers argued that the black-red color scheme has been used by many other artists in Big Planet Made, typically the group VIVIZ, so it cannot be concluded that BADVILLAIN plagiarized Baby Monster.
However, in May, when BADVILLAIN continued to release detailed member introduction videos, more similarities were "spotted", such as the layout of the introduction, the colors, and even the music used were very similar.
The highlight was the group's official photo series released on May 26. BADVILLAIN wore denim outfits and took photos against a white background. This style is very similar to the Baby Monster photo series released after Ahyeon's comeback.
BADVILLAIN has a total of 7 members just like Baby Monster, so the controversy increases.
Many opinions say that BADVILLAIN seems to have used unhealthy promotional tricks, taking advantage of the image and popularity of Baby Monster - a group from a big company (YG Entertainment), to attract attention before debuting.
In the competitive K-pop industry, groups from smaller companies don’t have the same advantage as groups from larger companies. If their music doesn’t really explode and doesn’t have anything special, they’ll soon be eliminated.
However, plagiarism is a sensitive issue in Kpop at the moment. Therefore, if BADVILLAIN really plagiarized Baby Monster to gain attention, this is quite a risky strategy. The lesson is that the group ILLIT, because of the NewJeans plagiarism controversy, has been turned away by many audiences.
