Transformation from changing production thinking

According to some residents, in the past, most households in Vinh My only grew rice. When saltwater intruded, the fields became barren, productivity decreased, and people's lives became even more difficult.

Since participating in technical training courses, capital support, seeds and guidance on new production models, many households have boldly changed their business mindset, proactively finding a direction suitable to the actual conditions of the locality. Mr. Lam Hoai Thuong (Ninh Loi A hamlet, Vinh My commune) shared: "Previously, rice farming was very unstable because of saltwater intrusion. Now I have switched to growing vegetables such as cucumber, bitter melon, pennywort... Each year I can grow 4 crops, with good prices, each crop earns about 9-10 million VND in profit, which translates into an income of 30-40 million VND/year, helping to stabilize life."

The model under rice fields - on crops brings stable income to people in Vinh My commune.

Changes like Mr. Thuong's are not unique. In Vinh My, more and more households are proactively applying the "multi-plant, multi-animal" model, combining cultivation and livestock raising to increase income. According to statistics, the whole commune currently has about 30 hectares of area for growing crops, mainly pennywort, cucumber, mustard greens, bitter melon... In addition, some households also grow fruit trees, short-term industrial crops or raise livestock and poultry - all creating a vivid picture of agricultural production, greening the land that was once contaminated with saline acid sulfate soil, bringing high and sustainable economic efficiency.

This success of Vinh My has an important contribution from the local government. Specifically, in recent times, the commune leaders have actively and effectively implemented many poverty reduction programs and projects from livelihood support, preferential loans, to building houses for poor and near-poor households.

Mr. Pham Chi Nguyen, Vice Chairman of Vinh My Commune People's Committee, said: "Vinh My Commune was established on the basis of merging three communes: Minh Dieu, Vinh Binh and Vinh My B. This is a huge advantage, because Minh Dieu and Vinh Binh both meet the advanced new rural standards, while Vinh My B is in the process of building a type V urban area. Currently, the commune has only 112 poor households, of which 7 are ethnic minorities. The commune government actively implements and integrates support policies in three national target programs, helping ethnic minorities stabilize their livelihoods and escape poverty sustainably."

In 2024, the Commune People's Committee will implement 18 poverty reduction projects, of which Project 2 - Diversifying livelihoods and developing poverty reduction models is considered a bright spot. Models of supporting trees, seeds and providing guidance on appropriate farming techniques help many Khmer households feel secure in production and increase their income.

Towards comprehensive development

Ninh Loi A Hamlet is home to a large number of Khmer ethnic people, with 134 households out of a total of 385 households in the hamlet. While there were many poor households in the hamlet before, now the people's lives have improved significantly.

Mr. Danh Khen, Secretary of the hamlet Party Cell, said: “Currently, the hamlet only has 3 poor households and 3 near-poor households. We are mobilizing and supporting 1 poor household and 1 near-poor household to escape poverty according to the set target. The good news is that the hamlet has completely eliminated poor households among the Khmer ethnic group.” It can be said that Ninh Loi A is a typical example in the sustainable poverty reduction movement in Vinh My commune.

According to the 2025 plan, Vinh My aims to reduce 0.10% of poor households (equivalent to 10/31 households) and reduce 0.31% of near-poor households (equivalent to 33/81 households). By the end of the year, it is expected that there will be only 21 poor households and 48 near-poor households.

People in Vinh My commune take advantage of vacant land to grow crops, forcing the land to "yield profit", bringing in a stable source of income.

Not stopping at poverty reduction, the commune also aims for comprehensive and sustainable development, focusing on improving the material and spiritual life quality of ethnic minorities. People are given the opportunity to access capital sources, learn vocational skills, and apply science and technology to not only escape poverty but also enrich themselves legitimately on their homeland.

When the people of Vinh My in general, and the Khmer people in particular, no longer have to worry about having a full meal, children happily go to school, laughter is heard amidst a bountiful harvest - that is a beautiful image of a countryside that is growing strongly. Every change today, behind it are countless stories of the diligence and hard work of the people and the persistent support and assistance of the Party, State and local authorities.
