- Ensuring the successful and effective organization of the Ca Mau Crab Festival
At the aquaculture session on October 28, Mr. Quach Van An gave a presentation on the topic "Ca Mau Crab Sector: Status Update and Key Issues to Tackle", providing an overview of the current status of the Ca Mau crab industry, existing challenges and development orientation in the coming time.
Mr. Quach Van An, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, presented a paper at the Workshop.
Mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) is the mainstay of aquaculture, accounting for about 95% of the total Scylla crab population in Vietnam, with over 386,000 hectares of farming area and an average output of over 40,000 tons/year, playing a pivotal role in the coastal economy . However, the crab industry is still facing many difficulties: unstable seed quality, lack of genetic selection program and standardized broodstock management, leading to increased disease, reduced productivity and survival rate. Most of the current hatcheries are converted from shrimp nurseries, which are not optimized for crab seed production.
In addition, the export market depends largely on live exports to China (70-80%), while value-added processed products are still very limited. To enhance global competitiveness, the Ca Mau crab industry needs to promote the improvement of breed quality, diversify markets, develop sustainable value chains, and associate with the forest-crab ecological farming model and modern farming models in the future.
Promoting international cooperation in research and genetic selection of Ca Mau crabs
During the workshop, leaders of the Department of Science and Technology of Ca Mau had in-depth working sessions with VinUni University, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and the University of Queensland (UQ), which are world-leading units in the field of gene technology and genetic selection of aquatic products.

The three parties have agreed to build a comprehensive, long-term cooperation program in research and development of the Ca Mau crab industry. In the immediate future, the parties will build and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), and at the same time implement a 1-year initial research project to collect a genetic database of the Ca Mau crab population. This will be an important initial step, laying the foundation for the genetic selection program and improving the crab breed in the next phase.
Ca Mau's participation in this international conference demonstrates the local strategic vision in applying high science and technology to the development of aquaculture and agriculture, while opening the door to international cooperation for the crab industry, one of the typical and valuable products of the Ca Mau region.
Ca Mau's typical products are sent to units as gifts, while promoting the image and cultural values of the southernmost land of the Fatherland.
With the support of leading international partners, Ca Mau hopes to successfully build an advanced crab breeding program, aiming to develop a sustainable crab industry with traceability and meeting global standards, thereby elevating the "Ca Mau Crab" brand on the world seafood map.
