Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and a major political , economic and cultural center in southern China. With an area of 22,100 km² and a population of nearly 9 million, Nanning includes 1 city, 4 districts, 7 urban areas and 3 national-level development zones.

Dubbed “China's Green City” and “the nostalgic place of world folk songs”, Nanning has won the United Nations Habitat Award, the titles of national civilized city, national sanitation city, model city of ethnic unity and national model city of dual support.

In 2024, Nanning's GDP will reach 599.53 billion yuan (about 84.2 billion USD), up 3% compared to 2023. The city is strategically located: to the east it borders Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao; to the south it faces the Gulf of Tonkin; and is an important intersection of the "Belt and Road". From that advantage, Nanning has become a major hub in the China-ASEAN supply chain, especially through the China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) - an annual trade event of regional scale.

With the orientation of developing into an “international city open to ASEAN”, Nanning is accelerating cross-border trade, industrial and investment cooperation, playing the role of a bridge between Guangxi provinces and the Vietnamese and Southeast Asian markets.

Bac Ninh - an attractive destination for Chinese investors

Located in the center of the Northern key economic region, Bac Ninh province is emerging as a particularly attractive location for foreign enterprises, including those from China. The synchronous industrial infrastructure system, favorable trading location and highly skilled human resources help Bac Ninh become an important transit point in the global production chain.

According to information from the authorities, in the first 9 months, the province has attracted over 15.3 billion USD in converted investment capital, including 162 newly granted domestic investment projects and 262 FDI projects with registered capital of 256,149.5 billion VND and 1,509.8 million USD, respectively; adjusted to increase capital for 141 domestic projects and 201 FDI projects with additional registered capital of 10,603.7 billion VND and 3,300.2 million USD. Besides investors from Korea, Japan, Singapore, Chinese capital flows are increasing rapidly, focusing strongly on the fields of supporting industries, electronics, construction materials and renewable energy.

Many enterprises from Nanning and Guangxi have established their presence in the industrial zones of Yen Phong, Thuan Thanh, Que Vo, Viet Yen, etc. These enterprises not only bring advanced production technology but also contribute to expanding the regional supply chain. The connection between logistics routes such as Nanning - Lang Son - Bac Ninh - Hai Phong helps transport goods between the two countries faster and more effectively.

Economic experts say that Bac Ninh, with its strengths in electronics, processing and export industries, and Nanning, with its role as a commercial and financial center of Guangxi, are forming a potential “expanded economic corridor of the Gulf of Tonkin”. This is also a vivid manifestation of the trend of Vietnam-China economic cooperation in the new development stage.

Towards green and sustainable cooperation

In addition to its commercial growth goals, Nanning is also a model for green and sustainable urban development. The city’s experiences in planning, environmental protection and clean energy development can become valuable suggestions for Bac Ninh in the process of building green industrial parks, smart urban areas and reducing carbon emissions.

From traditional relations to cooperation in the field of green industry, Nanning and Bac Ninh are creating a bridge for trade, integration and sustainable development. In the near future, this economic corridor is expected to become an important growth driver, connecting the two strategic “gateways” of China and Vietnam in the ASEAN economic community.
