Elementary school writing exercises praised for being rich in emotion

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/05/2023

Primary school students in Ho Chi Minh City are in the process of reviewing and taking the final exam for the second semester of the 2022-2023 school year. How to help primary school students do well in the writing section of the Vietnamese language test, and how to teach and learn to "say no to model essays" are concerns of many parents.

Respect the immature but emotional sentences

Ms. Nguyen Minh Thuy An, homeroom teacher of grade 2 at Nguyen Van Triet Primary School, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, said: "For grade 2 students, in order for the writing part to not be off-topic and to say no to sample writing, teachers need to do a good job of guiding students on how to analyze the topic, instructing students to write essays according to a network diagram with many suitable ideas, close to their life experiences and suggestive. Finally, be patient in grading and correcting students' papers because students are new to writing sentences and have limited language skills."

In her teaching practice, Ms. Thuy An said that there are many creative students who express their ideas in very good and emotional essays. "A few years ago, when I taught 3rd grade, there was a girl who described her hometown that impressed me the most. It was an essay about her hometown Gia Lai with coffee plantations blooming white and fragrant," Ms. Thuy An said.

Ms. Thuy An cited some typical paragraphs of the second grade students she is teaching. With the topic "Write about your relatives", there are some writing exercises that, according to Ms. Thuy An, are "immature but very cute descriptive writing".

"In my family, my father is the person I love the most. My father's name is Tran Phuoc Hiep. My father is 40 years old. My father is small and chubby. My father has black hair that curves to the right", those are some sentences in the writing assignment of a second grade student named Cat Tien.

Or student Quynh Anh, class 2/8, Nguyen Van Triet Primary School, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City describes her younger brother:

"At home, my younger brother's name is Win. Win is 4 years old this year. Win has pretty short hair and big round eyes. Win also has a mischievous round face. Win has a chubby figure. In the afternoon, when I pick Win up, my sister and I play chess and checkers together. Sometimes we study and draw together...".

5th graders' writing exercises make adults tear up

Mr. Hoang Gia Hung, a teacher at Nguyen Thai Son Primary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, said that there were essays by his students that made him feel moved while grading them. Although the writing was not excellent and some sentences were unclear, these essays showed that the students were very diligent in observing the life around them, and their writing contained stories and many emotions.

Teacher Hoang Gia Hung introduces some typical essays. With the topic of describing a beautiful scene associated with childhood, a 5th grade student wrote. Here are some typical excerpts:

"Homeland is where we witness each step of growth and is the peaceful place to return to for each person, that's why we love every road, every stone and every beautiful scene of our homeland. For me, the river is the most beautiful scene of my homeland. My childhood is always associated with this river.

The river in my hometown is very gentle. In every season, the river water flows slowly as if deeply admiring the beautiful scenery of my hometown. In spring, when flowers sprout, bloom and bear fruit, the same is true on the other side of the river. The river water is very clear, with only tiny ripples. Standing on the bank, I can still see fish swimming happily below...

When autumn comes, the red leaves of the Indian almond tree cast their shadows, turning a corner of the river red. At that time, the river was wearing a colorful coat. When winter comes, the trees along the riverbank gradually lose all their leaves, leaving only bare trees. At that time, the river becomes cold in a way typical of the homeland. Not as vibrant and bustling as summer, but seemingly with some ups and downs. Does the river want to remind us: It's winter, keep warm and don't play in the water because you might get sick!...

Even though I have gone far away, the image of the river will forever remain in my memory. For me, the river is like a friend, it has made my soul happier. The memories of the river will never be erased from the childhood memories in my heart. The river will forever be the most beautiful memory of my childhood."

With the same topic, there is another essay by a 5th grade student at Nguyen Thai Son Primary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, which was praised by teacher Hoang Gia Hung. We quote some passages:

"On weekend mornings, my father often takes me to the park to exercise. The wonderful scenery in the park in the morning helps me feel refreshed. Here I discover so many interesting things.

Part of the writing assignment describing a morning in the park for a 5th grade student

The sky was not yet bright, the air was still a bit chilly and there were few people around. My father and I walked around the park. After a while, the sky became clearer, the bright rays of sunlight gradually spread everywhere. On the leaves and grass, it was easy to see the sparkling, pretty dew drops. The grass, the brick path and the rows of stone benches were all wet with night dew. The rows of trees stretched out in the early morning sun, the colors of the flower pots also gradually became clearer. The flowers in the park were very bright. The bright yellow daisies were the color of the sun, the purple bougainvillea was fragrant. The roses in the flower pots along the path were in full bloom.

The birds have woken up, chirping, flying from branch to branch, chirping. The gentle breezes carry the scent of grass and trees, awakening all human senses. Every corner of the park is filled with exciting sports activities. In the large yard in front of the park, grandparents are practicing yoga with sticks. Near the playground, groups of adults are playing badminton, shuttlecock, soccer... There are also a few children following their parents to exercise like my family, some are cycling, some are jumping rope, jogging and doing exercises like they learned in school. Everyone gathers in small groups, practicing and chatting together, it's really fun. The atmosphere has become more bustling and exciting...".
