Birds in the heart of the coastal city

In the coastal city of Tuy Hoa, Dong Hoa, amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life, there are still peaceful little corners - where pigeons hover over the streets and parks in the cool morning breeze.

In the afternoon, those simple street corners become unique highlights, contributing to creating a unique identity for the street space.

In a small corner of Dien Hong Park (Tuy Hoa Ward) facing Tran Hung Dao Street, there are several wooden pigeon coops, beautifully decorated, lying peacefully among the trees. The flock of more than a hundred pigeons, big and small, does not belong to any individual, every day they fly from their nests to the park to be friends with the locals and tourists.

Mr. Bui Minh Duong, a tourist from Hai Phong, happily expressed that after visiting Nhan Mountain, he walked down and saw a flock of pigeons. Some flew up into the trees, some landed on people's hands. Some hovered on the grass and flapped their wings to find their way back to their nests. Many gathered around the elderly sitting on stone benches or played with children. Many people proactively brought food to the birds and it seemed that they were used to this, so they were very friendly and close to people. "Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, this peaceful scene still exists, making people feel warm," Mr. Duong expressed.

The pigeons swooped down and were very friendly to people.

On the weekend, from Van Hoa commune to Tuy Hoa, Ms. Nguyen Thi Khoa and her two children were quite surprised to see a flock of white pigeons in Ho Son park. “I thought the birds would fly away when they saw people, but in less than a minute they and the children were playing together. Since the park has pigeons, this place has become much more lively. Needless to say, the children just said that when they go to Tuy Hoa, they must go see the pigeons,” Ms. Khoa shared.

Coming to Dong Hoa ward, there are not only pigeons raised in Truong Thinh park but also flocks of hundreds of natural sparrows, appearing every morning and evening on Ly Thuong Kiet street, Nguyen Tat Thanh street or the green grass at 1/7 square. They fly around chirping, jumping from tall trees on the sidewalk or median strip to the street. When they land on a tree, their chirping makes a small corner noisy. Even better, even though there is the sound of car engines, the sound of playing in the park or many people passing by, they still fly calmly. It seems that the bustling pace of life on the street has long been a familiar part to them.

Ms. Ngo Thi Lanh, a resident of Dong Hoa ward, shared: During the harvest season, the number of birds is the largest because at that time they have a source of food which is the remaining rice grains in the nearby fields. “On one side is National Highway 1 with the noise of North-South vehicles going back and forth, on the other side is the afternoon light from Ban Thach river spreading out over the fields covering the entire administrative center of the ward. In that space, flocks of sparrows call to each other to find rice and then take off together, leaving a long trail printed on the rosy sky. Just that much, the noise also calms down!”, Ms. Lanh said.

In order to spread the message of peace and build the image of a friendly and hospitable destination, from 2022, 10 pairs of parent birds will be raised on a trial basis at Dien Hong Park.

In 2024, another 30 white pigeons will be raised in Ho Son Park. Currently, the flock of pigeons in Dien Hong Park has grown to about 200, and in Ho Son Park there are more than 100.

At Truong Thinh Park, a few pairs of parent birds have just been raised on a trial basis, so they are unfamiliar with people and do not dare to "interact" with people in the park. The Phu Yen Urban Environment Joint Stock Company is in charge of taming and caring for them.

People doing morning exercises take the opportunity to interact with white doves.

Ms. Vo Thi Tu, a worker at Phu Yen Urban Environment Joint Stock Company, who is in charge of taking care of the pigeons, said: This is a domestic pigeon breed, so it has a small body, is agile and easily adapts to the natural environment in the city. The birds are fed three times a day, and their water and cage are also changed and cleaned regularly. To tame them, at first, a specialized worker was in charge of feeding the birds and they only came down to eat when they heard a familiar call. Gradually, people fed them together, so the birds became more tame. Now, visitors can take pictures and interact naturally with them.

Pigeons have long been a symbol of peace. In many large cities at home and abroad, local authorities have been raising flocks of pigeons in parks and squares to create liveliness for public spaces. Whether they are domesticated or wild, the birds that exist amidst the hustle and bustle of the city streets are bringing a peaceful, friendly atmosphere to the daily lives of urban residents.

The image of pigeons in parks and on the streets has become an indispensable part of the sustainable development of modern cities. The birds existing amidst the hustle and bustle of the streets bring peace and friendliness to the daily lives of urban residents.
