In the journey of connecting culture andeducation , mobile library trips have been contributing to spreading reading culture in the community, nurturing a generation that loves knowledge, loves to read and loves to learn.
Reading culture is awakened
In late May, Dong Nai Provincial Library organized a mobile library trip to serve children at Dong Nai Center for Children with Disabilities (in Buu Hoa Ward, Bien Hoa City). No loud slogans, just laughter from the central yard - where children with many congenital disabilities eagerly awaited a special day.
Director of Dong Nai Provincial Library Tran Anh Tho said that with the goal of bringing books closer to children with disabilities, the program has arranged a mobile library with many carefully selected books, suitable for the needs and receptive abilities of the children. In particular, visually impaired children have access to books in Braille, books with raised images; hearing impaired children can participate in storytelling activities in sign language, knowledge exploration and fun quizzes...
Director of Dong Nai Provincial Library TRAN ANH THO said that Dong Nai is a locality that does not have a mobile library car equipped from the Knowledge Light Program of the Department of Libraries (now the Department of Grassroots Culture, Family and Libraries, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). However, Dong Nai has a pickup truck designed flexibly and creatively as a mobile library car, which has been effectively serving readers in the province.
“The warm welcome from the students surprised us. Some students could not read but hugged the books to their chests, smiling with satisfaction. Those moments are the motivation for us to continue organizing mobile book carts to serve the community with the belief that each book is a flame of hope and determination,” said Ms. Tho.
At Hang Gon Secondary School (Hang Gon Commune, Long Khanh City), the exciting atmosphere of the mobile library not only comes from reading, but students also participate in many knowledge-seeking games, quizzes with prizes, and even storytelling competitions... The activities have turned the schoolyard into a colorful "small book fair". Through the Mobile Library Program, Dong Nai Provincial Library has built a true cultural space - where students can play, learn, be curious and be inspired to learn for life.
Nguyen Yen Nhi, a student at Hang Gon Secondary School, shared: “Participating in the experience with the province’s mobile library, what I like most is the reading and answering questions guided by the staff at Dong Nai Provincial Library. I hope that there will be many more mobile library trips to serve schools so that we have the opportunity to access new books, both to have fun and to improve our knowledge, serving our studies.”
Join hands to spread reading culture in the community
The special feature of this year's Mobile Library Program is that Dong Nai cooperates with member libraries of the Southeast and South Central Region Library Association to serve the primary and secondary school systems in the province. Not only bringing books to libraries, but also sharing operating models, how to organize games, and applying STEAM to guide reading for students.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, an officer of Lam Dong Provincial Library, expressed: “Each province has its own strengths in serving readers and developing a reading culture. When organizing mobile library vehicles together, we learn a lot from each other, from how to create highlights to connecting with students and schools... Reading culture cannot be just “sown”, but also needs to be “nurtured” through long-term companionship to create a sustainable reading culture ecosystem - from schools to families and communities”.
Chairman of the Southeast and South Central Region Library Association Dinh Xuan Huong, Director of Ninh Thuan Provincial Library, said that the coordination and joint efforts to organize the Mobile Library Program in Dong Nai is a practical activity, concretizing the Party and State's policy in developing a reading culture, bringing books and knowledge to the community. This is also an opportunity for library units to strengthen connections, exchanges, effectively promote joint resources, and effectively carry out assigned political tasks.
Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Hong An affirmed that organizing mobile library trips to serve readers at schools is not only a meaningful cultural event, but also an opportunity to look back on the journey of developing a reading culture - a sustainable foundational value that contributes to the development of people and society in the new era, the era of striving with the nation. Mobile trips filled with the light of knowledge to remote areas help children access books and information for free, narrowing the gap in access to knowledge between urban and rural areas, thereby nurturing big dreams from small pages of books.
