Projects that gradually turn Ho Chi Minh City into a "global city"
Celebrating the 49th anniversary of the Liberation of the South, National Reunification and International Labor Day on May 1, Ho Chi Minh City left its mark with outstanding projects, creating a new face and new mark for the country's economic locomotive.
These projects not only change the face of Ho Chi Minh City, benefiting people, but also awakening potential, contributing to accelerating Ho Chi Minh City's economic growth in the coming years.
In particular, after Resolution 98/2023/QH15 of the National Assembly on piloting a number of specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Ho Chi Minh City took effect from August 2023, it helped many projects to be implemented faster, opening up a promising development period.
The first project that left an impression is the Saigon River Tunnel: On November 20, 2011, the historic river tunnel opened to traffic after 7 years of construction, connecting the two banks of the river and reducing the load on neighboring traffic routes. The river tunnel is the most important item in the East-West Highway Construction Project of Ho Chi Minh City. The Saigon River Tunnel is the most modern project in Southeast Asia, with a length of 1.49 km, a width of 33 m, a height of 9 m, and 6 traffic lanes. |
The first urban area in Ho Chi Minh City: Invested and built by Phu My Hung Development Corporation. This is the first model urban area in the country recognized by the Ministry of Construction . In 1996, Phu My Hung Corporation began to build Phu My Hung urban infrastructure. That is Nguyen Van Linh Avenue, 17.8 km long, 120 m wide, with 10 lanes. Nguyen Van Linh Avenue was completely newly built, crossing the swampy land of Nha Be district (now District 7), District 8 and Binh Chanh district. From here, the first drawings of the urban area began to materialize. After more than 30 years of construction and development, Phu My Hung urban area is now not only complete in terms of function and architectural space, but also shapes the lifestyle of "Civilized urban area, humane community", attracting more than 65,000 residents to live, work and study. Of which, about 50% are foreigners from more than 26 countries and territories around the world. |
The iconic Landmark 81 building is the tallest building in Vietnam, built by Vingroup since 2015, completed and officially put into operation since 2018 with an investment of up to 300 million USD. Landmark 81 inaugurated and put into operation the first item (Vincom Center Landmark 81 Shopping Mall) after 1,461 days of construction. On April 28, 2019, the tower continued to inaugurate the highest Skyview Observatory in Vietnam and also the tallest building in Southeast Asia at that time and is currently in the top 20 tallest buildings in the world. |
Event Square: The square in front of Uncle Ho's Statue (Nguyen Hue Street, commonly known as the walking street) was put into use by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on April 30, 2015 after 7 months of construction. This is the most beautiful and modern square in Vietnam, with a length of 640 m, a width of 64 m, stretching from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to Bach Dang Wharf, with a total construction cost of nearly 430 billion VND. |
Ba Son Bridge Project: Ba Son Bridge crosses the Saigon River, connecting District 1 with Thu Duc City, started construction in 2015 and opened to traffic on the occasion of April 30, 2022, with a total investment of nearly 3,100 billion VND. The bridge is over 1,400 m long with 6 lanes; cable-stayed design with the main tower considered the symbol of the welcome gate from the city center through Thu Thiem New Urban Area. Ba Son Bridge is expected to be a prominent architectural highlight on the Saigon River. |
Metro Line 1 and the first underground space in Ho Chi Minh City: In the photo is Metro Line 1 running in the Ba Son underground station. Under Quach Thi Trang Square, District 1 is gradually forming an underground neighborhood stretching 2.5 km through the City Theater to Ba Son Port. From here, Ho Chi Minh City's underground space will gradually be expanded along with metro lines and other projects in the future. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, the construction of underground sections and underground stations has been completed. Of which, Ben Thanh Central Station - the intersection of metro lines 1, 2, 3A and 4, is the size of a 4-storey building, 236 m long, 60 m wide, and located at a depth of 32 m. It is expected that Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line 1 will be commercially exploited in July 2024. |
The construction project of Ring Road 3, the section through Ho Chi Minh City, is being rushed. The entire Ring Road 3 route through Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, and Long An was started in June 2023, with a total capital of more than 75,300 billion VND, and is expected to be put into operation in 2026. |
In recent years, a series of expressways have been put into operation to connect the traffic network from Ho Chi Minh City to other provinces and cities such as: Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway. It is expected that there will be more Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai Expressway and Ho Chi Minh City - Chon Thanh Expressway. |
The most modern 3-level An Phu intersection in Ho Chi Minh City: According to the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board (investor), An Phu intersection started construction at the end of 2022 and is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025. This project has an investment of more than 3,400 billion VND and is considered the most modern intersection in Ho Chi Minh City. |
Airport City Project: The T3 Terminal Project at Tan Son Nhat Airport with an investment capital of VND 11,000 billion is being urgently implemented. It is expected to be put into operation in June 2025. Terminal T3 integrates a variety of technologies and utilities, helping to enhance the passenger experience and aims to become an "Airport City". |
