On October 4, the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences ( Hanoi National University) celebrated its 60th anniversary, starting with a class of 38 math majors in September 1965, which has trained many great mathematicians and scientists.
Chairman of the Science and Training Council of the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences Nguyen Vu Luong shared about the "records" this prestigious school has achieved.
As of 2025, the school's students have won 249 medals out of 770 medals in international competitions (accounting for 32%). Of these, 79 are gold medals out of 198 gold medals nationwide (accounting for 40%). The math major alone has 32 gold medals.
The school also has many students participating in the International Math Olympiad with perfect scores (6 out of 10 students nationwide), and students winning gold medals in two consecutive International Olympiads (6 out of 9 students nationwide).
Notably, the school is the place where the first 10th grader of Vietnam won a gold medal at the International Math and Physics Olympiad. Three Vietnamese students who won a gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad also came from the school.
In 1999, 2003, 2015 and 2024, the Vietnamese Physics and Informatics team participating in the International Olympics all had 100% of its members being students of the school...
But according to Mr. Le Cong Loi - the school's principal, the school's greatest achievement is not only in the number of medals and titles, but even greater is the pioneering training model and international integration.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long requested the Ministry of Education and Training, Hanoi National University and the University of Natural Sciences to research and find solutions to innovate the specialized school model in depth and breadth, creating a basis and foundation for the system of specialized high schools to develop.

Prioritize resources and adequate funding to upgrade facilities, learning equipment, laboratories, functional room systems, and build a Natural Science Specialized High School worthy of being the number 1 high school in the country.
At the same time, there are mechanisms and policies to recognize and honor teachers and students with outstanding achievements.
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its establishment, the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences was awarded the second-class Labor Medal by the Party and the State. From evacuation classroom in the middle of Thai Nguyen forest to the cradle of talent training
60 years ago, in September 1965, at the Thai Nguyen evacuation area of Hanoi University, the first specialized math class was established by decision of the Government Council, with 38 students.
In the context of the country still at war, this demonstrates the Party and State's vision in nurturing talent and creating high-quality human resources. Up to now, the Natural Science Specialized School has 5 specialized blocks including math, information technology, physics, chemistry, and biology, with 44 classes and more than 1,800 students.
For six decades, the specialized high school system of the University, later the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences (under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi) has become the place to help tens of thousands of students take flight.
Many names shine in the international arena, now becoming leaders and orientators for scientific research and talent training such as Professor Ngo Bao Chau, Professor Dam Thanh Son, Professor Ngo Dac Tuan, Professor Dao Hai Long... Many generations of students of this school have become managers, scientists, educators, and businessmen who have contributed to the country.
Talking about one of the "pillars" of this prestigious school, Mr. Nguyen Vu Luong said that it is the generation of excellent and dedicated teachers who nurture talent, including big names such as Professor Le Van Thiem, Professor Hoang Tuy...
