Mountains higher than Mount Everest

Measured from base to summit and distance from the equator, Mount Everest is surpassed by two other mountains, Mauna Kea and Chimborazo.

Everest's towering height of 8,849 m (29,000 ft) makes the famous Himalayan mountain the tallest in the world , but that's not actually the case, according to IFL Science . Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world above sea level, but there are a few different measurements for mountains. Mauna Kea in Hawai'i is the tallest mountain from base to summit. Meanwhile, because the Earth's crust is slightly thicker at the equator, Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador is the tallest if the summit is measured from the center of the Earth.

Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano that last erupted 4,500 years ago. Meaning “White Mountain” in Hawaiian, Mauna Kea’s summit stands at 14,000 feet (4,205 m) above sea level. While it is the state’s tallest mountain, it pales in comparison to Mount Everest. However, Mauna Kea’s foothills often go unnoticed. Including the foothills that extend deep into the Pacific Ocean , Mauna Kea’s elevation more than doubles to 35,000 feet (10,210 m), dwarfing Mount Everest.

A 75-meter glacier once covered the summit during the Ice Age, leading to the formation of high-altitude lakes. Mauna Kea's 50-kilometer dome is home to the Mauna Kea Observatory, which offers some of the most advanced astronomical observations in the world.

Everest's second rival is Mount Chimborazo, located in the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes in central Ecuador. Mount Chimborazo is a dormant, ice-covered volcano whose peak is even higher above sea level than Mount Everest at 6,310 m. As the highest peak in Ecuador, Mount Chimborazo has long been considered the highest mountain in the Andes, but that title actually belongs to Mount Aconcagua.

Mount Chimborazo's unique location directly above the thickest point on Earth makes its summit the farthest from the Earth's center. Although it is 2,539 meters shorter than Mount Everest, Chimborazo's summit is 2,072 meters higher from the center of the Earth.
