The world's least cash-using countries

(CLO) A study has ranked the world's least cash-using countries, based on many factors such as cryptocurrency ownership rate, credit/debit card usage, mobile payment popularity and the ratio of non-cash transactions to total payments.

According to analysis from online gaming platform Box Bet, the most “cashless” country today is Norway, where nearly 99.5% of the population uses bank cards and more than 66% have switched to mobile payments. The rate of cashless payments here reaches 97.76% – the highest in the world.

Top 10 countries with the least cash use:

10. South Korea

About 2 million people own Bitcoin and 98.67% of the population uses cards. Non-cash payments in total payment value: 84.01%.

9. Canada

In 9th place, Canadians have adopted mobile payments at a high rate of 82.74%. Nearly 7% of the population holds Bitcoin. Non-cash payments as a percentage of total payment value: 96.17%.

8. China

The country has nearly 60 million Bitcoin holders but a relatively low mobile payment adoption rate of just 37.95%. More than 88% of the population uses credit or debit cards. Cashless payments as a percentage of total payments: 75.76%.

7. Australia

Only 2.75% of the population owns Bitcoin, but almost everyone uses credit or debit cards (99.32%). Non-cash payments in total payment value: 95.94%.

6. Sweden

One of the countries that is getting closer to a cashless society, with 99.69% of the population owning a credit or debit card, and 48.35% having adopted mobile payments. Cashless payment ratio in total payment value: 98.17%.

5. Denmark

100% of the population uses credit or debit cards, but mobile phone usage is only 58.5%. Cashless payment rate in total payment value: 99.02%.

4. America

Nearly 53 million Americans own Bitcoin and mobile payment adoption is 82%. Cashless payments as a percentage of total payment value: 90%.

3. Singapore

Singapore is ranked 3rd with 97.19% of the population using credit or debit cards. More than 11% of the population holds Bitcoin. Cashless payments in total payment value: 93.5%.

2. Netherlands

Almost the entire Dutch population, 99.73%, uses credit or debit cards, however their mobile payment adoption rate is relatively low, only 37.43%. Cashless payments in total payment value: 98.31%.

1. Norway

Coming in at number 1, Norway is the world's least cash-intensive country. 99.48% of the population uses a credit or debit card and the country's mobile payment adoption rate is 66.74%. Cashless payments as a percentage of total payments: 97.76%.
