According to Wccftech , Niantic - the company behind the hit game Pokémon Go, is reportedly in talks to sell its video game division to Scopely for $3.5 billion. There is no guarantee that the deal will be completed.
Founded in 2010 as Niantic Labs as an internal Google project, Niantic was spun off as an independent company in 2015 after Google restructured into Alphabet Inc. The company quickly made a name for itself in the field of augmented reality (AR) games on mobile devices.
Pokémon Go is one of the most successful mobile games, bringing in billions of dollars in revenue for Niantic. However, Niantic is now considering selling the game division.

Despite the huge success of Pokémon Go , Niantic has failed to replicate this feat with other titles. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite launched in 2019 but was shut down less than three years later. NBA All-World only lasted a few months in 2023. Some highly anticipated projects like Marvel World of Heroes were canceled before release, while games like Monster Hunter Now and Pikmin Bloom have failed to achieve significant success.
Niantic’s negotiations to sell its gaming division are said to be part of the company’s restructuring strategy. The unit that is said to be taking over the gaming business is Scopely, which currently owns many popular mobile titles such as Monopoly Go!, Marvel Strike Force and Star Trek Fleet Command . In 2023, Scopely was acquired by Savvy Games Group - a company under the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia - for $4.9 billion.
If the deal goes through, it would be a significant change for Niantic and could have implications for the future of Pokémon Go and other games developed by the company. However, until an official announcement is made, it remains unclear whether Niantic is actually exiting the gaming business and how Pokémon Go will operate under its new ownership.
