The results were announced on the afternoon of October 2 by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden), opening the 2023 Nobel Prize season.

According to the Nobel Assembly, the two scientists Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissma made important discoveries in the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 as early as 2020.

These groundbreaking findings have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with the immune system, contributing to the unprecedented speed of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.

Ms. Katalin Karikó is a professor and PhD in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology, while Mr. Drew Weissma is a famous physician and medical researcher.

After the Nobel Prize in Medicine, the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economics were announced from October 3 to 9.

Each prize will be worth 11 million SEK (Swedish krona, equivalent to more than 986,000 USD), expected to be awarded with a certificate and medal on December 10, the anniversary of founder Alfred Nobel's death.

The Nobel Prizes in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Economics will be awarded in Stockholm, Sweden; the Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in Oslo, Norway.
