Master - Doctor Tran Thien Tai, Head of the Allergy - Clinical Immunology Unit, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said: Urticaria is a common allergic disease. The disease can occur at any age. Epidemiology shows that about 20% of the population has had urticaria at least once in their life. The disease is characterized by the appearance of erythematous papules on the skin with shapes such as round, oval, polycyclic annular with itching.
Urticaria is divided into two types: acute and chronic. With the acute type, symptoms usually disappear within less than 6 weeks. If symptoms persist for more than 6 weeks, it is called chronic.
There are many causes of urticaria such as factors that act as allergens such as food, additives, preservatives, drugs, infections, viral infections, parasitic infections, including environmental factors such as weather, sunlight, hot and cold temperatures...
Hives are itchy, red, raised bumps on the skin.
Many cases without a clear cause are classified as primary chronic urticaria. The pathogenesis of urticaria is due to a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system that produces intermediate chemicals such as histamine, prostaglandin, and leutriene, causing clinical symptoms. Hives can appear in many locations on the body, including common areas such as the face, throat, arms and legs, back, buttocks, etc.
To prevent hives, people should keep their living environment clean and airy, avoid wearing clothes made from materials that can easily irritate the skin, maintain personal hygiene, limit exposure to allergens such as dog and cat hair, pollen, dust, and if there is a history of hives, pay attention to allergens...
" Urticaria is not related to liver disease , however many liver diseases such as cirrhosis and obstructive jaundice also cause itching. Therefore, patients with symptoms of itching and red rash on the skin need to visit medical facilities for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment," Dr. Tai recommended.
