On November 7, Dr. Vo Phi Au, Head of the Neonatal Department ( Ca Mau Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital , Ca Mau), said that the unit had just discharged a baby girl born extremely prematurely at 25 weeks of gestation, weighing only 850 grams, after more than 80 days of intensive treatment.
Previously, at around 6:50 a.m. on August 18, at U Minh Medical Center, the baby girl of Ms. VTTN (Khanh Lam commune, Ca Mau) was born more than 3 months earlier than the expected date of birth on November 29. When she was born, the baby cried weakly and had severe respiratory failure, so she was given breathing support and then urgently transferred to Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital.

At the hospital, the team of the Neonatal Department led by specialist Dr. Vo Phi Au immediately placed the baby in an incubator, provided non-invasive respiratory support, administered intravenous nutrition, and used Surfactant to help expand the lungs through a minimally invasive method. After 7 days of resuscitation, the baby began to practice drinking milk through a tube; on the 20th day, the baby was able to breathe oxygen and was kept warm with the Kangaroo method with his mother.
After 40 days, the baby was breathing air on its own; by day 58, it was exclusively breastfed, gaining weight well and no complications with the retina or hearing were recorded. On the day of discharge, the baby weighed 2 kg, adjusted gestational age 35 weeks, completely breathing on its own and breastfeeding.
Doctor Vo Phi Au said this is the first case at Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital to successfully save an extremely premature baby born at 25 weeks. "Extremely premature babies are a very fragile group of patients, with organs such as the lungs, heart, brain, and kidneys not yet fully developed, and are susceptible to serious complications. Saving the baby weighing less than 1 kg is the result of close coordination between departments and the family's trust," Doctor Au shared.
According to statistics, from the beginning of 2024 to October 2025, the Neonatal Department of Ca Mau Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital treated 252 premature babies, of which the survival rate reached 87.3%. In 2025 alone, 5 babies under 1 kg were saved.
