In the current context, when new generation tobacco products such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products are infiltrating school life in sophisticated and attractive forms, preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco has become an important task of the entire education sector. Not only for public health, but also for the future of the young generation.
By specific measures, up to now, all schools in the area have issued regulations prohibiting smoking on campus; 100% of students and teachers have signed a commitment to implement... Extracurricular activities and communication on tobacco prevention and control have become regular and in-depth.
In the 2025 National Competition on Designing Lessons on Preventing the Harmful Effects of Tobacco, Electronic Cigarettes, and Heated Tobacco Products for High School Teachers, organized by the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund ( Ministry of Health ) in coordination with the Education and Times Newspaper, Phu Tho province had 193 entries from 138 schools, of which 6 entered the final round and 3 excellent entries won prizes.
This is a clear demonstration of the sense of responsibility, creativity and dedication of the teaching staff of Phu Tho province in the work of propaganda and education on the prevention of the harmful effects of tobacco.
From the implementation, Deputy Director of Phu Tho Department of Education and Training Nguyen Quang Minh said: "We have drawn some lessons. First of all, it is necessary to have clear policies and lead by example. Schools must issue strict internal regulations, and leaders and teachers must take the lead in implementing them to set an example for students."
Notably, the implementation of the model has close coordination between the school, parents and social organizations. When the Women's Association, Parents' Association, and Youth Union join together, the communication effectiveness is multiplied.
The implementation process, inspection, supervision and reward work are always transparent; tobacco prevention and control criteria are included in emulation evaluation; violations are handled educationally; outstanding collectives and individuals are promptly rewarded.
In order to improve the efficiency and replicate the model, Mr. Nguyen Quang Minh proposed some additional solutions. First of all, it is necessary to innovate communication messages, Focus on e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, organize creative campaigns such as student-made clips, interactive posters, flag-raising radio, livestreams... Schools need to promote the role of homeroom teachers and student propagandists, each class has a "Smoke-free school environment ambassador", coordinate with teachers to detect early, reflect and spread action.
In particular, inter-sectoral coordination is needed to control the sale of drugs around schools. In particular, there should be a connection between the Police, Market Management, and Health to prevent the sale of electronic cigarettes near schools and in cyberspace.
Setting up a “Smoke-Free” index in schools is also a good way, combining monitoring of commitments, extracurricular activities, violations, students encouraging relatives to quit smoking… to evaluate and reward periodically.
The “Smoke-free school” model is not only a management task, but also an educational mission - a concrete action for the health of students, for the future of the country. When a smoke-free school environment is truly formed and maintained, it will create a solid foundation for a generation that is healthy, knowledgeable, courageous and responsible for themselves, their families and society.
