Where girls express ideas through technology

Recently, classrooms across Bosnia and Herzegovina have become spaces for girls to not only learn about technology, but also create, shape, and use technology to express their ideas.

Through the "Schools of the Future" program, more than 500 students and 70 teachers from 29 schools have had the opportunity to study in modern Science , Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) classrooms, develop projects, and adapt to a rapidly digitalizing world.

Make room for innovation

For many girls, being in STEM classes is the first step toward discovering their potential. Nađa Imamović, a student at the Technical School in Zenica, a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, learned how to build websites and use Arduino microchips through programming workshops.

This female student said that now she is no longer hesitant about programming and it has become a way for her to express herself and leave her own mark.

Amela Kukolj, an IT teacher at Vrhbosna Primary School, has also seen positive changes in her teaching thanks to the "Schools of the Future" program.

“The program has opened up a whole new approach to my teaching,” the teacher shared. “I am proud to see the girls excel in many activities. They are proactive, cooperative, and show strong creativity.”

She emphasized that STEM classrooms are not just about modern classrooms but also about affirming that girls have a rightful place in the STEM field.

STEM is for us

Through the activities of the "Schools of the Future" program, students are not only equipped with technical skills but also form a strong sense of belonging and self-affirmation.

Ilma Zukić, a student at the Technical School in Zenica, shared: "I used to think that STEM was not for me, until I realized that the most important thing is will and effort. We need to be bold, break stereotypes, because STEM is for us and we belong to this field."

The "Schools of the Future" programme is supported through the " Economic Governance for Growth" project, funded by the Government of the Kingdom of Norway and implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the United Nations Development Programme.

The project has helped schools across the country not only focus on technology, but also use technology as a tool for innovation. The activities in the program have empowered both girls and boys, encouraging them to challenge long-standing stereotypes surrounding STEM.

A new educational environment has been created where technology is accessible to everyone. Through modern STEM classes, students not only improve their technical knowledge, but also develop their creativity and teamwork skills to build a solid foundation for future success.

“The program is a collaborative effort, bringing together teachers, students and mentors to foster a vibrant learning environment,” said Olav Reinertsen, Norwegian Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Over the past two years, we have joined hands to carry out an ambitious mission: Improving the quality of STEM education by providing modern infrastructure and equipment and equipping students with lifelong skills and knowledge to keep up with the rapid pace of technology development and meet the growing demands of the labor market."
