Binh Hai purple onion is a product that has been recognized as OCOP. With a mild climate and suitable soil, the coastal area of Binh Hai commune is very suitable for onion growth and high productivity. Currently, Binh Hai commune has 305 households growing onions, covering an area of 212 hectares, the second largest onion growing area in the province, only after Ly Son.

According to farmers, this onion crop was planted in January. After more than 2 months of care, the onion plants are ready for harvest with an estimated average yield of more than 1 ton/sao.

Currently, the price of purple onions is fluctuating from 20,000 to 25,000 VND/kg, depending on the type and quality. “My family has been growing onions for more than 20 years. The weather this winter-spring crop was not very favorable, but thanks to the cooperative's attention and propaganda for us to apply appropriate growing techniques, the overall yield was quite good, everyone was excited,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Truc (55 years old), a long-time onion grower in Thanh Thuy village.

To have a bumper crop as expected, every step is carefully prepared by farmers. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cao (38 years old), Thanh Thuy village said that onions are easy to grow but the care is very hard, especially in the stage of new planting and young leaves because at this time pests and diseases are very easy to break out. The average yield is more than 1 ton per sao, after deducting all costs, the profit can be from 10 to 12 million VND/sao.

Not only serving the consumption needs in the province, Binh Hai purple onions are also purchased by traders to sell in neighboring provinces. Vice Chairman of Binh Hai Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Quang Vu, said that in order to move towards sustainable production, in recent years, the commune government has also actively supported people in accessing new farming techniques, using biological fertilizers, and aiming to produce according to VietGAP standards to improve product quality, while minimizing the impact on the environment.
