Huong Thuy farmers say no to burning straw in the fields

Straw rolling machine helps to reduce straw burning in the fields.

Win-win

While many places in the city still burn straw in the fields after the winter-spring harvest to plant the summer-autumn rice crop in time, farmers in Huong Thuy almost do not burn straw in the fields. A large amount of straw after harvest is collected by people and brought home to compost as organic fertilizer, animal feed, and partly supplied to straw rolling machine owners in the city and in the locality.

Farmer Vo Tien Thanh in Thuy Chau ward used to burn straw in the fields after harvesting rice crops. Since being informed by all levels, departments and sectors about the harmful effects of straw burning, he has changed his perception and said no to burning straw in the fields. During the last winter-spring crop, Mr. Thanh's household also received support from departments, sectors and local authorities to test the straw rolling machine.

Mr. Thanh affirmed that using straw rolling machines in the fields has many benefits, such as quickly collecting a large amount of straw in the fields, promptly preparing the land for summer-autumn crop cultivation. With straw rolling machines, people do not have to spend time and effort collecting straw and bringing it home. There is no longer the situation of burning straw in the fields like before, so people participating in traffic also feel more secure and safe. In terms of economic benefits, the average price of collecting straw by rolling machines is less than 500 thousand VND per ton of straw, while collecting by hand is nearly 700 thousand VND.

Mr. Phan Van Hien's household in Thuy Thanh commune was also supported by the town to bring in a mechanical machine to test straw rolling in the last winter-spring crop. Mr. Hien realized that using a straw rolling machine after harvest has many benefits. In addition to ensuring traffic safety for road users, not burning straw in the fields also contributes to ensuring the environment of residential areas, ensuring the health of people, and not causing negative impacts on production land.

Prevent straw burning in the fields

In order to increase straw collection, minimize and completely prevent straw burning in the fields, in the last winter-spring crop, households of Mr. Vo Tien Thanh (Thuy Chau ward), Phan Van Hien (Thuy Thanh commune), Vo Manh Hung (Thuy Phuong ward) received investment and support from Huong Thuy town to use straw rolling machines for collection. This is a policy implemented according to Resolution No. 03/2025/NQ-HDND, dated January 7, 2025 of the City People's Council on regulations on a number of policies to support and encourage the development of agricultural production until 2030.

The straw rolling machines invested in by Huong Thuy town are 100% new, domestically produced, with a capacity of 100 - 180 rolls/hour. Currently, there are dozens of straw rolling machines in Huong Thuy, basically meeting the needs of post-harvest straw processing in localities. The town is continuing to research and invest, supporting localities and cooperatives to purchase more straw rolling machines to develop safe and sustainable agriculture in the town.

There are currently about 80 - 90 straw rolling machines in the city. Mr. Le Van Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, informed that the number of straw rolling machines available basically meets the demand for straw rolling in the city after harvesting rice crops. However, a number of farmers are still not interested in collecting straw with rolling machines, leading to the "waste" of mechanical machinery. In the last winter-spring crop, there were still many cases of burning straw in the fields, some farmers in Huong Tra town were also administratively fined 2.5 million VND per household, however, the number of fines is only the "surface" of warning.
