Farmers are focusing on sowing summer-autumn rice.

After harvesting the winter-spring rice crop, farmers are cleaning up their fields, preparing for the 2025 summer-autumn crop. This season, weather conditions are relatively unfavorable. Therefore, to ensure a successful harvest, the provincial Department of Agriculture has implemented a comprehensive set of solutions to improve productivity and product quality.

Over 60% of the area has been sown.

During the recent winter-spring crop season, although rice prices decreased compared to the same period last year, they generally remained high, resulting in relatively stable profits. Thanks to this, farmers are quite enthusiastic about starting the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop. Mr. Nguyen Van Chien from Hoa Thanh commune (Dong Hoa town) said: "After harvesting, I immediately started cleaning the fields, preparing the soil, and getting rice seeds ready for sowing. Because the summer-autumn crop falls during the peak hot months, I always pay attention to reinforcing the dikes to prevent rapid water loss from the fields, thoroughly preparing the soil, and proactively controlling golden apple snails and weeds."

While renting a tractor for the second time to plow and harrow the land in preparation for the new crop, Ms. Le Thi Phan from Hoa Hoi commune (Phu Hoa district) said: "This field is located at the head of the main North canal, so the water arrives first. After harvesting the winter-spring rice crop, the farmers start preparing carefully for the summer-autumn crop, especially the land preparation and seed selection. This season, I continue to buy certified BDR57 seeds to sow in rows and sparsely for my family's 6 sao (approximately 0.6 hectares) of rice. Because of the sunny weather, according to experience, as soon as the land is leveled, we sow immediately so that the rice seeds are embedded in the mud; if we harrow and level the land in the morning and sow in the afternoon, the seeds will dry on the surface of the field and sprout..."

According to the plan, the entire province will sow 24,500 hectares of rice during the 2025 summer-autumn crop season; the main rice varieties will be: DV108, Dai Thom 8, BDR27, PY10, and supplementary varieties: MT10, BDB6, CH133, PY8… To date, farmers have sown nearly 14,000 hectares, concentrated in the districts of Tay Hoa, Phu Hoa, Tuy An, Dong Xuan, and Dong Hoa town.

Similarly, in the fields of An Cu, An Dinh, and An Nghiep communes (Tuy An district), farmers have been urgently sowing rice seeds in recent days to keep up with the district's general planting schedule. To date, farmers have completed sowing about 45% of the area. Mr. Tran Tan Khoa, Director of An Nghiep Agricultural Cooperative, said: This season, the cooperative is cultivating 240 hectares of rice varieties including DV108, Dai Thom 8, Bac Thinh, TBR97, and MT10. Currently, 170 hectares have been sown, and it is expected to be completed by June 15th.

According to Mr. Khoa, to reduce production costs during the summer-autumn crop season, in addition to properly preparing the land and managing water in the fields to limit weeds and the harmful development of rats, snails, and other pests, the cooperative focuses on guiding farmers in selecting healthy rice varieties that are resistant to pests, diseases, and adverse weather conditions. This helps reduce costs in caring for and replanting rice, and minimizes the use of pesticides. Furthermore, the cooperative advises farmers to apply fertilizer in a balanced manner according to the rice plant's growth needs to save on fertilizer costs.

To have a successful harvest

To help farmers successfully cultivate the summer-autumn rice crop, the provincial Department of Agriculture and local authorities have been actively implementing many comprehensive solutions to help farmers effectively cope with unfavorable production conditions and strive to minimize costs.

According to Mr. Truong Quang Tuong, Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Livestock, to ensure a successful 2025 summer-autumn crop, in addition to ensuring irrigation water for production, localities need to focus on supporting and guiding farmers to promote mechanization and apply scientific and technological advancements to production through training sessions, field workshops at the beginning of the season, and specific models to reduce production costs, improve productivity, quality, and selling price of products.

"Farmers need to pay attention to ensuring the quarantine period between two rice crops, properly carrying out land preparation, straw treatment, and eradicating pests and diseases in the fields; proactively applying IPM rice production and cultivation according to the IPHM program, 'three reductions, three increases,' 'one must, five reductions,' and smart rice farming adapted to climate change. In addition, farmers need to sow seeds simultaneously and concentrate them in each area and field to facilitate pest and disease management, and make rice care and harvesting more convenient," Mr. Tuong said.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Tran, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Tay Hoa District: For the 2025 summer-autumn crop, the entire district will cultivate over 6,500 hectares. Given the potential for outbreaks of pests and diseases affecting production, the district has directed relevant units and the People's Committees of communes and towns to prepare well in all aspects, including seeds, land preparation, the use of organic base fertilizers, and to organize training courses to impart knowledge on IPHM (Integrated Pest Management System) to help farmers adopt advanced techniques, reduce input costs, and increase profits in rice cultivation.

Recognizing the benefits of applying IPHM (Integrated Pest Management) to rice cultivation, after attending training, Mr. Nguyen Hai in Hoa My Dong commune (Tay Hoa district) applied it to his field. Mr. Hai said: "This season, I changed the sowing density to 6-7 kg/sao (1 sao = 360 square meters), a reduction of 4-5 kg/sao compared to before; at the same time, I will increase the application of organic fertilizer to improve soil health and rice growth. Hopefully, the rice plants in the field applying IPHM will grow and develop well, be more resistant to pests and diseases and lodging, and the harvest yield will be higher than with traditional cultivation."
