Nghia Lo commune is one of the key fruit growing areas of Nghia Lo town with a total area of up to 245 hectares, of which 236 hectares are in the stable harvest stage. According to statistics, on average each year, Nghia Lo commune supplies the market with more than 600 tons of fresh fruit, bringing in a revenue of over 12 billion VND. Thanks to growing fruit trees, many households here have an income of hundreds of millions of VND each year. Mr. Pham Minh Luyen in village 9, Nghia Lo commune said: "Previously, my family's income mainly depended on tea trees. Through research and field surveys, I found that orange trees bring high economic efficiency, so my family converted 3 hectares of tea to orange trees. Up to now, my family's model of growing oranges intercropped with tea yields about 30 tons of fruit each year, bringing in a revenue of over 400 million VND".

Nghia Lo people convert ineffective agricultural land to grow watermelon, bringing high economic efficiency.

Like farmers in Nghia Lo commune, farmers in Thanh Luong commune, Nghia Lo town are also trying to find ways to develop the economy to improve their lives. A typical example is the family of Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy in Ban Khinh village. These days, Ms. Thuy is focusing on taking care of and harvesting watermelons. This is the second year that Ms. Thuy has applied the watermelon farming model on an area of 2,000 m2 of ineffective rice fields. Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy said: "Watermelon is very easy to grow, not picky about soil, and the profit is much better than growing rice, so recently many households in the village have converted ineffective rice fields to grow watermelons. On average, her family earns nearly 50 million VND per crop, which gives her children money to study and improve their lives."

Up to now, the entire Nghia Lo town has had nearly 45 hectares of land converted to crop structure. Of which, over 32 hectares have been converted to grow annual crops such as corn, vegetables, bitter melon, various melons, chili peppers, etc. and more than 8 hectares of perennial crops, mainly citrus fruit trees. Many models initially brought in incomes of 250 - 350 million VND/ha/year such as the model of growing pumpkin for seeds, Japanese green chili, melon, watermelon, etc. The change not only comes from the correct policies of the Party Committee and government but also the result of consensus and active response from the people. Previously ineffective rice fields have now "changed their clothes" with fruit orchards and vegetable fields with many times higher economic value.

Sharing the same will and aspiration to enrich their families and communities like many farmers in Nghia Lo town, in recent years, in the mountainous district of Mu Cang Chai, many households have boldly converted ineffective farming land to grow some crops with high economic value such as peaches, pears, crispy persimmons and strawberries. Through this new way of thinking, it shows that people are no longer limited to unstable corn and upland rice crops, but have boldly "changed the clothes" of barren land, nurtured valuable crops, opening a new chapter full of hope for families and communities.

Mr. Mua A Manh in Na Hang Tua Chu village, Pung Luong commune said: "My family currently has 4 hectares of Taiwanese pear trees, of which 2 hectares have been harvested and 2 hectares have just been newly planted. Each year, pear trees can harvest 4 - 8 tons of fruit at a price of 20 - 40 thousand VND/kg, bringing very high economic efficiency. Since planting pears, my family's life has been much better than before."

Mr. Ly A Tua - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Pung Luong commune said: "Previously, people mainly grew corn and rice. Through propaganda and mobilization, people have boldly transformed the crop structure with many new crop varieties, suitable for climate and soil conditions, bringing high productivity and efficiency. Especially, pear trees with an area of over 70 hectares, of which half of the area has been harvested. Compared to other crops, pear trees bring higher economic efficiency, contributing to "changing the skin" for many households, helping them gradually escape from difficulties, have a more prosperous and happier life".
Thanks to changes in both people's thinking and production methods, by the end of 2024, the poverty rate in Mu Cang Chai district will be only nearly 29%, equivalent to nearly 4,000 poor households. It is expected that the total poverty rate in the district will be more than 23% in 2025, making it one of the few particularly disadvantaged districts with the fastest poverty reduction rate in the country. Mr. Giang A Cau - Secretary of Mu Cang Chai District Party Committee said: "The district has improved the poor's access to production services, basic social services, and paid attention to vocational training, especially general occupations and short-term training... Since then, the awareness, capacity, and responsibility of the poor in hunger eradication and poverty reduction have been significantly improved. In addition, the district has also issued policies and mechanisms to build close links to organize production according to the value chain, ensuring a stable market for agricultural products, creating sustainable livelihoods for the people".

The journey of crop conversion in Yen Bai still has many challenges, but the positive changes from each farmer are an important foundation for Yen Bai to continue developing green and sustainable agriculture. It is also the path for the mountainous province of Yen Bai to gradually "change its skin" in the integration period.
