On July 2, Nam Can Tho University Hospital announced that its doctors had successfully operated on a patient with multiple plexiform neurofibromatosis. This is a rare and complicated condition, with the potential for malignancy if not treated promptly.
The team of doctors performed surgery to completely remove all 4 tumors on the patient's face and a 40 cm tumor on the patient's left leg.

Previously, a 28-year-old female patient, residing in Can Tho City, was hospitalized with prolonged pain in the gluteal nerve area and stiffness in her left leg, causing difficulty in movement and daily activities.
Through examination and specialist consultation, the doctor noted many subcutaneous tumors developing in the soft tissue area. Of these, there were two large tumors with serious effects, including: a tumor in the left calf measuring up to 40 cm in size, soft, causing difficulty in walking; a tumor in the left buttock measuring about 30 cm in size, soft, compressing surrounding tissue, causing prolonged pain. In addition, the patient also had many small tumors in the facial area.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results showed diffuse soft tissue damage under the skin of the left leg, the entire leg and buttocks. Although it had not invaded the muscles, it was typical of plexiform neurofibromatosis - a disease with a high risk of recurrence, progressing silently and easily turning malignant if not treated promptly.
After a comprehensive assessment, the medical team performed surgery to completely remove all four facial tumors and a 40 cm tumor in the left calf.
Currently, the patient has passed the stable postoperative period, is closely monitored, given antibiotics, active pain relief, and further treatment is directed based on the pathological results.
Doctors say that neurofibromatosis is a benign disease but develops silently, when large tumors hinder daily activities and cause aesthetic loss. Some forms can cause deformation, prolonged pain, and bleeding ulcers.
