It takes passion and effort.

Nguyen Phuc Bao Tran is a 12th grade student at Binh Phu High School, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City. Not only is she good at English (3rd prize in the Ho Chi Minh City English competition in grades 9 and 12, gold medal in English in the April Ho Chi Minh City Open Olympic in grade 10), Bao Tran is also good at all subjects with an average score from grade 10 to the first semester of grade 12 from 9.2 to 9.3 and she has been the best in class and in her grade many times.

Most recently, this female student achieved an IELTS score of 8.0 on her first try without taking any preparation classes, especially achieving a perfect score of 9.0/9.0 in listening and 8.5/9.0 in reading.

Nguyen Phuc Bao Tran is good at all subjects, but English is the most outstanding.

Bao Tran said: "I started learning English at the center in grade 2. When I got acquainted with this language, I really loved it. By grade 8, I was on the school team participating in the city-level English competition for excellent students."

According to Bao Tran, when studying, this female student divided into 2 main areas, the first area includes listening and speaking skills. In this area, Tran will absorb English in the most natural way by watching movies.

The remaining part is reading and writing, which Tran mainly studies at school and practices based on team exercises.

"Learning English requires talent, diligence, and perseverance. But I believe that even if talent is not outstanding, as long as we have enough passion, love, effort, and apply the right learning method, we can master not only English but any language," Bao Tran shared.

As someone who has won many awards in excellent student exams, Tran commented that while English in excellent student exams focuses on grammar and vocabulary, IELTS requires proficiency in all four skills, but each exam has its own level of difficulty.

Bao Tran conquered 8.0 IELTS score without going to a test center

"When I was preparing for the city's excellent student exam, I focused on advanced grammar points, word forms... but this exam did not require listening and speaking skills. Because for many years I only focused on improving the excellent student exam format, when I self-studied IELTS and took practice tests, my listening score was always the lowest. Since then, I have listened to English content more often through solving questions, dictation methods (listening and dictating) and especially watching movies," said Bao Tran.

However, the skill that Tran invested the most in practicing was writing because it requires a very difficult academic writing style. In this skill, Tran "plowed" through the entire book Hackers IELTS Writing in just the last 2 weeks of the sprint. This book provided Tran with specific directions for each type of question as well as a few academic phrases that this female student could apply to her exam.

Along with writing, speaking is also a skill that requires good reflexes, a large vocabulary, and takes a lot of time to practice. Tran focused on speaking fluently rather than using too much "high-level" vocabulary that lacks fluency and coherence.

"During my preparation, I reviewed the Speaking test set predicted for each quarter. When I took the test, I was a bit nervous at first, but when I entered the room, I regained my composure. Because this is the skill I like most when learning English, I was very excited about this part of the test."

For the listening part, in the 2-week sprint, Tran promoted the dictation method. "I often cannot maintain concentration throughout the listening part and miss a lot of the answer content. Besides, I often forget to conjugate verbs and consider singular and plural nouns, so this dictation method helps me improve my concentration significantly, as well as limit small mistakes such as missing s/es", Tran recounted.

As for the reading part, according to Tran, the difficulty lies not only in vocabulary but also in time pressure. However, during the process of reviewing for the excellent student exam, Tran has become accustomed to solving questions continuously for a long time and has accumulated a fair amount of vocabulary. "During the reading part, alertness is very important, so I tried to go to bed early the night before. When doing the test, I also looked very carefully at the interpretation 'traps' so as not to lose points regrettably," Tran shared her experience.

Tran concluded that although the goals and exam questions of the gifted student exams are different from the IELTS exam, thanks to participating in and winning many prizes in the gifted student exams, Tran not only benefits in terms of knowledge but also has experience in test-taking skills to achieve high IELTS results right from the first exam.

It is known that this female student who achieved an IELTS score of 8.0 on her first attempt applied to the professional communications program at RMIT University Vietnam because she is very interested in jobs related to creativity, brand development, note-taking...
