TPO - Cherishing the dream of studying abroad since middle school, Le Hoang Tien, class 12A1, Foreign Language High School, has now been admitted to a top university in the US with a scholarship worth more than 8.6 billion VND.

The university that Hoang Tien just got into early is called Vassar College, ranked 12th among the top liberal arts universities in the United States.

She shared that on the morning of December 7, she nervously opened the letter and was overwhelmed with joy when she received the congratulatory notice of her admission and the first person to call to inform her was her mother. Needless to say, her mother was also extremely happy because completing the application for the scholarship was a long journey, with the companionship and support of her mother and the whole family.

The scholarship package Tien received was 85,000 USD/year including tuition and living expenses. The total for 4 years of university is 340,000 USD, equivalent to more than 8.6 billion VND.

Before that, to achieve the goal of entering her dream school, she had studied for the SAT since grade 10. In grade 11, the female student spent most of her time doing scientific research and participating in extracurricular activities as well as writing essays. In grade 12, she took the IELTS exam. As a result, she achieved 1,540 SAT points; 8.0 IELTS points.

Tien shared that she had cherished the dream of studying abroad in the US since she was a junior high school student to broaden her horizons and knowledge. However, when her path was not clear, she decided to study high school at a specialized language school and continue studying piano at the Vietnam National Academy of Music because she had a great love for piano.

Studying two programs at the same time with overlapping schedules, sometimes overlapping, made Hoang Tien quite tired. In addition, Tien is also an active volunteer at the Museum of Ethnology and a contributor to a newspaper, so she always feels busy.

"I often have to make a list of things to do during the day, prioritize them, and do them slowly to ensure success," Tien said.

Improve yourself through social activities

During her 3 years of high school, the female student of the specialized language school participated in a number of competitions and won awards such as: Third prize in the competition for excellent students of the Northern Coast and Delta; Third prize in the English Olympic competition of Hanoi National University.

“Each person has their own learning method to achieve the highest efficiency. I consider English as a tool used in daily life from reading newspapers, listening to music, watching news in English, writing paragraphs in English is also a way to understand the language more deeply and expand vocabulary,” Tien said.

I also share my experience with the following students to prepare and complete their application to send to target schools. The most basic thing is to ensure basic knowledge, grades in class and achieve good scores on standardized tests. In addition to studying, students also need to promote and improve themselves to be more active, know how to join hands to share for the benefit of the community by participating in extracurricular activities, having their own projects to have a neat application, demonstrating their outstanding abilities.

For example, during my studies, I and other students from high schools in Hanoi organized music programs to raise money and goods to support students in difficult circumstances.

Vassar College requires each student to write two essays and one original work. Right from the middle of 11th grade, Tien started writing essays seriously, focusing on cultural experiences in life. In addition, she also shared what she saw and heard about the culture of ethnic minorities on charity trips to mountainous provinces. The trips gave her a lot of emotions and experiences, which were the material for her essay.

Le Hoang Tien shared her plan to go to the US to study at the end of summer 2025. In the immediate future, she will have to complete her school program as well as prepare mentally and acquire important and necessary skills to integrate well into the new environment, where she must be independent in life and study, without support from her family.

However, I am confident and excited because I will be able to study in an international environment, learn from friends and explore the world with many interesting things.
