Nguyen Thi Tam's opponent is Nikhat Zareen - the reigning world champion in the 52 kg category before moving down to the 50 kg category. In addition, Nikhat also received cheers from a large number of home fans.
Facing a highly rated opponent, Nguyen Thi Tam still entered the match confidently and actively attacked. However, the Vietnamese fighter's punches lacked precision, while Nikhat had quality counterattacks.
In the first half, Nguyen Thi Tam also received a yellow card for pushing her opponent twice. At the end of the first half, Nikhat received 5 points of 10, while Nguyen Thi Tam received 5 points of 9 from the referees from Japan, Australia, Egypt, Peru and Venezuela.
In the second round, Nguyen Thi Tam maintained her attacking style. The Vietnamese fighter's punches were more precise, causing Nikhat many difficulties.
In this round, it was the home boxer's turn to receive a yellow card for choking his opponent. At the end of the round, Nguyen Thi Tam received three 10s and two 9s, while Nikhat Zareen received two 10s and three 9s.
Trailing by 4 points (Nikhat had a higher total score from 4 judges), Nguyen Thi Tam was forced to attack in the final round in hopes of turning the situation around and winning the match.
However, with the experience of the reigning champion, Nikhat proactively kept his distance and maintained a moderate attack pace, making it impossible for the Vietnamese boxer to create any surprises. Round 3 ended with 4 referees giving both boxers 8 points, with the Peruvian referee giving Zareen a 9.
With a 5-0 overall victory, Nikhat Zareen won the championship and a prize of 100,000 USD. Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Tam received 50,000 USD (more than 1.1 billion VND) for the runner-up title.
Despite the defeat, Nguyen Thi Tam still made history as the first Vietnamese boxer to reach the finals of the world championship.
