India surpasses China to become the world's most populous country

MarketWatch analyzed data from the United Nations (UN) showing that India has surpassed China to become the world's most populous country with a population of 1,425,782,975 people as of April 14, 2023, while China's population will decrease to 1,425,748,032 people.

China has been the world's most populous country since at least 1950, when the UN began publishing population data.

The projection is based on data released in July 2022 in the UN’s “World Population Prospects” report and a simple linear equation. However, the UN report estimates that India will surpass China to become the world’s most populous country “around 2023.”

The UN has collected population data for more than 200 countries and areas that had at least 1,000 people in the previous year. The data is collected from a variety of sources, depending on how a country estimates its own population. The UN population projections are then made for January 1 and July 1 each year.

The UN had previously predicted India's population to be 1,422,026,528 on January 1, 2023, and 1,428,627,663 on July 1, 2023, an increase of more than 6.6 million. China was number one on January 1, 2023, with a population of 1,425,849,288, which is expected to drop to 1,425,671,352 in July as China lost a total of nearly 178,000 people.

Specifically, MarketWatch looked at the rate of change each day to determine the exact moment India had a larger population than China. It’s a crude, but widely accepted, approach. UN data shows the difference in population from January 1 to July 1, with India adding an average of about 36,470 people per day, while China’s population declined, albeit slowly, by about 983 people per day. An analysis of hourly data from April 14 confirms that the moment of population difference between the two countries occurred early in the day.

India could be home to 1.7 billion people by 2064

The UN says that at the current rate of population growth, India could be home to 1.7 billion people by 2064.

This population growth will bring advantages in terms of labor force for the South Asian country. However, besides that, the Indian government will also have to face many challenges in ensuring food, shelter as well as medical andeducational conditions for nearly 1.5 billion people. According to estimates, about 800 million people in this country are receiving government benefits.

Faced with a rapidly growing population, the Indian government has long planned to increase agricultural production to serve the country's rapid population growth. Currently, India is the second largest producer of rice, wheat and sugar, the largest consumer of sugar, and the world's leading importer of edible oils, according to Reuters.
