Raising civets to become quite rich

Việt NamViệt Nam23/10/2023

In Cai Nhum hamlet, Mr. Danh Dung is not only a pioneer in successfully raising civets for commercial purposes, but is also willing to share his experience with those who want to learn and start a business with this model locally.

Mr. Dung shared: “I have been nurturing the civet farming model since 2017, and only implemented it in 2019. Initially, I visited the civet farming model in Soc Trang and Ca Mau , then came back to test it with 10 breeding animals. After a period of raising the herd, I have now succeeded with the civet farming model, with a profit of 250 million VND/year. I plan to expand the farming area; at the same time, replicate the model for people who want to raise civets, especially the Khmer people.”

Mr. Danh Dung takes care of civets.

According to Mr. Dung, the main food of civets is fish and some fruits such as papaya and ripe bananas. To successfully raise civets commercially, it is necessary to learn and gain experience from previous breeders, especially how to care for them, build cages, and understand the habits and common diseases of this animal species... Thanks to diligence and willingness to learn, Mr. Dung has now expanded the cage to nearly 200m2 and provided more civets for breeding.

“Civets are easy to raise, rarely get sick, and have a dense reproductive cycle. Thanks to that, from the initial 10 breeding animals, I now have 15 pairs of parent civets and 45 commercial civets, while I both raise the herd and sell breeding animals and commercial civets. The average selling price for breeding animals from 3 months old and up is 10 million VND/pair, while I sell commercial civets for about 1.3 million VND/kg. I am assured of the output because there are traders from all over coming to place orders,” said Mr. Dung.

Party Cell Secretary, Head of Cai Nhum Hamlet Thai Van Tu said: “Mr. Danh Dung boldly took the lead in production and business, diligently learned and accumulated experience to develop the family economy . With success from the civet farming model, he shared his experience with the people to develop the economy. Up to now, Mr. Danh Dung has guided 8 local Khmer households to raise civets with a total of 30 pairs of parent civets. The parent civets are reproducing and developing well.”

According to comrade Thai Van Tu, in the locality, Mr. Danh Dung is also a prestigious person among the Khmer people, always strictly following the Party's guidelines, the State's policies and laws, and taking the lead in movements when launched locally. In the coming time, the local government will continue to create conditions and support Mr. Danh Dung in carrying out procedures to establish a civet farming cooperative.

“From the farming practice of Mr. Danh Dung’s family, it can be seen that raising civets is a highly economically efficient farming model, does not require a large production area, and has a moderate initial investment cost. In particular, the techniques for raising and caring for civets are simple, do not require much effort, and the food source is easy to find and cheap… Mr. Danh Dung’s family is one of the bright spots in household economic development that needs to be replicated locally,” said Mr. Thai Van Tu.
