PHYSICAL WORRIES
The Vietnamese team had their first training session yesterday (May 30), on the way to the match against Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team have 12 days to prepare for the match at Bukit Jalil Stadium. This is not a long time, in the context that the Korean coach still has a lot of work to do. One of which is to improve his physical fitness.

In yesterday afternoon's training session, the Vietnamese team was missing 6 players, including Nguyen Filip, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Cao Pendant Quang Vinh and Nguyen Quang Hai ( Hanoi Police Club) and Nguyen Tien Linh, Vo Hoang Minh Khoa (Binh Duong Club), because this group of players participated in the V-League make-up match on the evening of May 30 between Binh Duong Club and Hanoi Police. This morning (May 31), all 6 new faces were in Hanoi to join the team. Hanoi Police Club agreed to release 4 key players early to the Vietnamese team, not participating in the make-up match against Binh Dinh on June 3.

Coach Kim Sang-sik had to carefully calculate the physical strength of the Hanoi Police Club players, as the team had just finished competing in the ASEAN Club Championship. Hanoi Police Club has played in 3 tournaments this season, with a total of 35 matches. In the match against Hanoi Club in round 24, Quang Hai and his teammates clearly showed a decline in physical strength, no longer fast and flexible enough to compete effectively due to having to "work hard" continuously.
In addition, the four pillars of the Vietnamese team, including Nguyen Hoang Duc, Do Duy Manh, Nguyen Van Vi and Nguyen Hai Long, also rushed to Malaysia to join the Southeast Asian Stars team in a friendly match against Manchester United (May 28), then immediately returned home to focus on the match against Malaysia. The remaining players also went through a stressful, long season, leading to difficulty in reaching their full physical strength as in the 2024 AFF Cup.
C WAIT FOR COACH K IM'S THERAPY TO HELP THE TEAM STRONG
This is not the first time that coach Kim Sang-sik has taken over the Vietnamese team when his players were physically exhausted. In June 2024, Mr. Kim also took over the team in the final stages and encountered many difficulties in building a playing style, when in most training sessions, the players could only practice at moderate intensity, unable to exert all their energy for tactical exercises to switch to a new playing style.
It was not until November 2024, when there were 2 weeks of concentrated training in Korea, that coach Kim Sang-sik was able to apply the physical training program according to K-League standards and gradually apply the philosophy.

Over the past two years, the Vietnamese team has reduced long-term training sessions to allow the V-League to operate normally, while domestic clubs have better conditions when participating in international tournaments. Training sessions only last from 10 to 12 days, following the FIFA Days schedule. Coach Kim Sang-sik will not have much time to thoroughly solve the problem, but can only "eat smart to be full, dress smart to be warm". After 1 year, Mr. Kim has understood his students' abilities and grasped the characteristics of Vietnamese football, in order to carefully prepare strategies for each training session.
In yesterday afternoon's training session, coach Kim Sang-sik mainly let the players relax, regain their ball feel and sense of space. The exercises were mainly stretching exercises, with moderate intensity, helping the whole team's spirit to be comfortable. Because the Vietnamese team had fewer days to prepare than their opponent Malaysia, and did not have time for a friendly match, it is likely that Mr. Kim will still use the old personnel framework and playing style, only improving small details such as coordinating attacks, preventing high balls (Malaysia has many tall naturalized players) and maintaining a reasonable team distance to organize counterattacks.
"Heavy" endurance and strength exercises like before the 2024 AFF Cup will be less applied. However, with a coach who emphasizes fighting ability and physical strength like Kim Sang-sik, the Vietnamese team will still be stuffed with training volume, but only when the whole team has adapted to the current training intensity. Calculating the appropriate exercises and methods so that the players do not overload their muscles, but still maintain the playing rhythm, is a big obstacle for coach Kim. However, with the Korean coaching team and a reasonable training plan that is improved based on the ability of each player, it can be believed that the Vietnamese team will reach the peak of form and fitness on June 10, when facing Malaysia at the "fortress" Bukit Jalil.
