OpenAI on October 6 announced a new feature for ChatGPT, its leading generative artificial intelligence (AI) model with 800 million weekly users, that allows ChatGPT to interact with everyday apps like Spotify and Booking.com.
Speaking to a crowd of developers at the company's annual Developer Day event in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman announced the new tool.
The new feature, called Apps SDK, allows ChatGPT to interact with a variety of apps to select music, search for real estate, or explore hotel and flight booking sites.
Initial partners including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow rolled out the feature on October 6 in the markets where their services operate.
Other partners, including Uber, AllTrails, and DoorDash, are expected to join later this year. However, the feature is not yet available in Europe, where stricter regulations apply to deploying data-intensive AI tools.
The move marks a significant expansion of ChatGPT's capabilities, combining traditional interactive elements like maps and playlists with conversational AI.
For example, a user can make a request like “Spotify, create a playlist for this Friday party” and instantly, the Spotify app functionality will be activated to perform the task right inside the ChatGPT interface.
ChatGPT can also suggest apps when it detects relevance in the conversation. For example, if a user is discussing buying a new home, ChatGPT can automatically switch to the Zillow app to browse properties that fit the user's budget on an interactive map right within the ChatGPT interface./.
