The Central Highlands is the center of coffee production in Vietnam. Coffee output here accounts for 90% of the country's coffee output, making our country the second largest coffee exporter in the world , after Brazil. Meanwhile, Lam Dong is the leader in the Central Highlands in terms of coffee growing area (about 328,650 hectares) and coffee output (about 200,000 tons). "Lam Dong has a rare advantage in being able to grow many coffee varieties such as arabica, robusta, catimor, bourbon, cherry... The arabica coffee grown in Cau Dat (Xuan Truong ward - Da Lat) is among the best in the world", said Ms. Le Hoang Diep Thao, at the same time affirming that she and Lam Dong province are aiming to "regain the position of Cau Dat - Da Lat arabica coffee", by investing in expanding the arabica specialty coffee growing area in the Da Lat area. Coffee expert Le Hoang Diep Thao will also promote the planting of Arabica coffee in Mang Den (Gia Lai) and invest in planting high-quality Robusta coffee in the Central Highlands to increase the value of Vietnamese coffee beans.
From her research, Master Huynh Thi Xuan Hoa, along with a research team from Phu Yen University, observed: "Most of the Central Highlands coffee is only at the raw product stage, exported as raw materials, and the consequence is low added value." According to Master Huynh Thi Xuan Hoa, it is urgent to bring the Central Highlands coffee industry in particular and the Vietnamese coffee industry in general to participate deeply in the global value chain by focusing on promoting deep processing, building international brands, international distribution... important links, bringing high added value to coffee beans. "If we only count the output of robusta coffee, Vietnam is the largest producer and exporter of robusta coffee in the world. This is the time for Vietnam to switch from exporting raw coffee materials to deep processing of coffee products to enhance the brand value of the Vietnamese coffee industry, as well as improve the living standards of coffee workers," Ms. Le Hoang Diep Thao clearly stated.
Coffee expert Le Hoang Diep Thao affirmed that if Robusta coffee is properly planted and cared for, combined with deep processing, this coffee variety can completely become high-end products supplied to the world market, not inferior to the famous Arabica coffee line. Many coffee experts also affirmed that it is not by chance that the people of the Central Highlands call coffee "brown gold". Because the material values and spiritual position that coffee trees bring to the people of the Central Highlands are very great. Since the appearance of the first coffee plantations in the Central Highlands, coffee culture has become a part of the lives of the Vietnamese people. It is not only a livelihood, but also a story of culture, lifestyle, and aesthetics of the Vietnamese people. In terms of economy alone, according to research data by Master Huynh Thi Xuan Hoa, coffee has contributed about 30% of the GDP of the Central Highlands region, creating jobs for more than 20% of the Central Highlands population. “I have been to many coffee growing countries in the world and found that Cau Dat - Da Lat Arabica coffee and Tay Nguyen Robusta coffee are very special in value. We must affirm this position with international friends,” Ms. Le Hoang Diep Thao emphasized.
