Prevent dengue fever:
08:19, August 15, 2023
Faced with the complicated developments of the dengue fever epidemic, the health sector is actively spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes and mobilizing people to proactively kill mosquito larvae to prevent the risk of infection and spread of the epidemic.
Proactively spray chemicals at outbreaks
After recording the death of a 49-year-old patient (residing in Mnut village, Ea Sol commune, Ea H'leo) due to dengue fever on August 4, the Ea H'leo District Medical Center urgently investigated the vector and determined that there were female Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes and larvae (wigglers) transmitting dengue fever in this area.
Deputy Director of Ea H'leo District Health Center Tran Anh Dung said that up to now, the whole district has nearly 300 cases of dengue fever with 8 outbreaks in Ea H'leo, Dliê Yang, Ea Nam, Ea Sol communes and Ea Drang town. In the face of the increasing trend of dengue fever in the district, especially after a death in Ea Sol commune, the District Health Center has deployed mosquito spraying in the entire village 4 and Mnut hamlet with about 200 households, an area of about 40,000 m2 . The unit also directed the Ea Sol Commune Health Station to develop a plan to advise the People's Committee and the Commune Disease Prevention and Control Steering Committee to direct departments, branches, organizations, and shock troops to coordinate and mobilize people to clean the environment, turn upside down containers and stagnant water inside and outside the house to kill mosquito larvae in each household in the area with dengue fever outbreaks before deploying chemical spraying to treat the outbreaks.

In Buon Don district, although the number of dengue fever cases is lower than the same period and no new outbreaks have occurred, the district's Health Center has proactively proposed that the provincial Center for Disease Control support funding for proactive spraying of chemicals to prevent and control dengue fever in Tan Hoa and Ea Wer communes to prevent the risk of outbreaks and spread due to unpredictable developments of the disease.
Spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes to prevent dengue fever only solves the "tip", the "root" of fighting dengue fever must be to kill mosquito larvae in households" - Deputy Director in charge of the Provincial Center for Disease Control Hoang Hai Phuc . |
Doctor Doan Quoc Dinh, Director of Buon Don District Medical Center, said that the Center has advised the District People's Committee to direct the People's Committees of communes and units in the area to participate in implementing, monitoring and urging the implementation of the mosquito larvae eradication campaign in households in all communes in the district. Organize and mobilize human resources to handle outbreaks when detected. Direct the commune health station to prepare workers with spraying machines, guides, spraying area maps and announcing the spraying schedule, and propagating for people to cooperate during the implementation process. Thanks to proactive implementation, the spraying of chemicals to kill mosquitoes at the two above locations has reached a rate of over 90% of protected households.
Dengue fever prevention work is still passive.
Having a 16-year-old daughter being treated for dengue fever at the Central Highlands General Hospital, Mr. Le Van Hoang (43 years old, residing in Group 1, Residential Group 4, Thanh Nhat Ward, Buon Ma Thuot City) confided: "If only I had been informed about dengue fever cases in surrounding households earlier, my daughter's condition would not have become so serious." According to Mr. Hoang, a few days ago, his daughter had symptoms of headache and fatigue for unknown reasons. The family took her to a private clinic for examination and blood tests but did not detect dengue fever and was prescribed medicine to treat her at home with a cold and fever. Two days later, Mr. Hoang's daughter fainted and was taken to Thien Hanh General Hospital for emergency treatment with a diagnosis of severe dengue fever, requiring oxygen therapy and is currently receiving intensive treatment at the Central Highlands General Hospital. Through discussion, Mr. Hoang admitted that due to subjective psychology, the family sometimes did not use mosquito nets when sleeping. A few years ago, his daughter had contracted dengue fever, so he thought it would be difficult for her to get sick again. In addition, when there were people in the surrounding households who had dengue fever, he did not receive warning information from specialized agencies, so he could not assess the possibility of getting the disease early enough to promptly inform the doctor during the diagnosis process for his child.

Through actual observation, at the SHX outbreak in inter-family group 1, the dengue cases were located next to each other, around the houses there were bushes, near streams, many families took advantage of ornamental plant pots to grow vegetables in front of the house and other types of plants were quite dense; the living space of some households was damp and dark. During the process of the health sector spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes, there were still households that hesitated to cooperate because they were afraid that the spraying would kill ornamental fish. Many people living near this area were surprised to learn about the information about dengue cases near where they lived.
According to Dr. Hoang Hai Phuc, Deputy Director in charge of the Provincial Center for Disease Control, in the face of the complicated developments of the epidemic, the Provincial People's Committee has recently assigned the health sector to identify high-risk areas to proactively organize spraying of chemicals to kill mosquitoes, and closely monitor the thorough handling of dengue outbreaks in the locality. Organize chemical spraying in 100% of households in the epidemic area. Along with that, strengthen communication on dengue prevention and control so that people voluntarily implement disease prevention measures for individuals and the community in a practical and effective manner.
According to the plan, the provincial Center for Disease Control will coordinate with localities to spray chemicals to kill mosquitoes at 9 locations with 9 outbreaks. However, people need to note that spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes only has a temporary effect on adult mosquitoes that are at risk of causing an epidemic. Many people think that if a family has sprayed chemicals to kill mosquitoes, mosquitoes will never appear again, which is completely wrong. People need to proactively clean their homes, clear bushes, remove water containers, and destroy mosquito larvae so that the effectiveness of preventing and controlling dengue fever can be long-lasting.
