Tilapia development needs to focus on 'green' trends

To sustainably develop the tilapia industry, it is necessary to synchronize three factors: Market, production organization and technology application.

Mr. Le Van Viet, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Xuyen Viet Production and Trading Joint Stock Company, believes that for the tilapia industry to make a breakthrough, the key factor is creativity. “Creativity here is to create different products - only creativity can bring about real difference and added value.”

In addition, according to Mr. Viet, it is necessary to build a close chain link between the production - processing - consumption stages, because only links can create strength. The tilapia market is currently very potential, the demand for consumption is increasing as natural aquatic resources are decreasing. Mr. Nhu Van Can, Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) emphasized: "To sustainably develop the tilapia industry, we need to synchronize all three factors: Market, production organization and technology application to improve product quality, reduce costs and increase competitiveness".

Specifically, in terms of the market, it is necessary to diversify products and pay special attention to standards and certifications that are trendy in the times, such as: Standards for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, green and environmentally friendly product standards, as well as product lines that suit current tastes and sustainable consumption trends.

Regarding production organization, to create products with stable quality and meet market requirements, cooperation is still the key solution. The connection between farmers and processing and exporting enterprises will help to accurately grasp market information, from demand, size to consumer tastes, thereby organizing production more appropriately and effectively. At the same time, linking small-scale production facilities into common hubs will create a large enough, stable and reliable supply source, meeting the requirements of value chains and export markets.

Regarding the application of technology, in the context of the technological revolution and digital transformation taking place strongly, we need to clearly define how to apply science and technology to save costs, reduce prices and improve production efficiency. This includes the application of new technologies in seed production, food processing, as well as technical solutions to control environmental quality and diseases.

Along with that, it is necessary to focus on reducing the feed conversion ratio (FCR) to increase productivity, reduce costs and improve product competitiveness. These are tasks that need to be implemented synchronously and continuously.

Local fisheries management agencies need to proactively support businesses in gathering small-scale farmers, helping them connect with businesses through contracts, commitments, farming area management and farming area code issuance. The second is the issue of market development. Currently, most enterprises are playing a key role in consumption and market expansion, but relying on enterprises alone is not enough. Besides, it is also necessary to form a tilapia community, because a single enterprise will find it difficult to create a widespread influence, while a community acting together will form collective strength, improving the position and competitiveness of the Vietnamese tilapia industry.
