Many negative impacts of climate change

Mr. Pham Quoc Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said that Ba Ria-Vung Tau province is being affected quite clearly by climate change. Recently, prolonged heavy rains and strong storms have been hitting the province more and more, causing localized flooding on some roads and economic damage, affecting people's lives.

Climate change also increases coastal erosion and channel silting in some localities in the province. The areas most concerned about erosion and silting have been studied and identified as Cua Lap area in Vung Tau city; Phuoc Tinh, Loc An in Long Dat district; Ho Tram, Ho Coc, Phuoc Thuan, Binh Chau in Xuyen Moc district.

In addition, climate change and rising sea levels will cause freshwater sources to become saline, making it difficult to provide water for domestic use, agriculture and industry. When there is a shortage of water for production and daily life, it leads to overexploitation and uncontrollable exploitation of groundwater.

Sustainable urban development

In order to overcome the shortcomings and limitations to improve the effectiveness of the urbanization process and sustainable urban development of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision 4038/QD-UBND on the implementation plan of the project "Developing Vietnamese cities to respond to climate change in the period 2021-2030" in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

Mr. Mai Trung Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction, informed that in order to proactively respond to climate change and raise awareness, sense of responsibility, and capacity of leaders at all levels in proactively responding to climate change in urban development and environmental protection, the Provincial People's Committee has approved a list of 19 projects and tasks to implement urban development to respond to climate change in the period of 2022-2030 in the province.

To carry out this task, the province has proposed 7 groups of solutions, including: propaganda; developing flood-proof housing, houses with high resistance to storms and winds; encouraging the construction of works using environmentally friendly materials; promoting the application of science and technology in the field of construction and urban development; developing green and smart infrastructure; reducing greenhouse gas emissions; mobilizing the community to participate.

The province also studies urban planning solutions with integrated and smart technical infrastructure systems according to climate conditions, terrain and typical urban appearance, actual conditions, and effectively utilizes land funds with the goal of protecting the environment.
