Over the years, Quang Tri province has made many efforts in developing, registering, and promoting products bearing geographical indications. However, the reality shows that the development of brand value from geographical indications in Quang Tri province remains modest and does not match its inherent potential. Organization of production, trade promotion, traceability, and value chain linkages still face many difficulties, especially in the context of increasingly deep competition and integration.
Therefore, the Department of Science and Technology has implemented various solutions to build intellectual property registration for products, while promoting the development of brands that have already been granted intellectual property protection.
Specifically, the Department of Science and Technology organizes activities in the field of intellectual property such as: workshops (in April 2025, the Department of Science and Technology organized a workshop on World Intellectual Property Day, April 26th, with the theme "Brand Value of Products Bearing Geographical Indications: Quang Tri Pepper, Quang Tri Bitter Tea, and Khe Sanh Coffee") to listen to the opinions of experts and scientists to better understand the brand value from geographical indications; and sharing practical experiences from cooperatives, businesses, and localities.
The Department of Science and Technology proposed practical solutions for the effective management, exploitation, and development of the province's geographical indication products, targeting both domestic and international markets. Through these activities, the Department of Science and Technology recorded many more initiatives, solutions, and connections between stakeholders to jointly enhance the position of Quang Tri's agricultural products in domestic and international markets.
Currently, Quang Tri province has many agricultural products that have built brands through various forms of intellectual property protection. Among them, Quang Tri pepper, Quang Tri bitter tea, and Khe Sanh coffee are typical products that have been protected by geographical indications – a form of protection with high and long-lasting value. However, it must be frankly acknowledged that the province's intellectual property sector still faces difficulties and challenges that need to be addressed.
The management, development, and promotion of geographical indications still face many shortcomings; the product value chain is not yet synchronously organized; market connectivity and the application of digital technology in traceability and brand promotion are limited; and the linkage between the state, scientists, businesses, and farmers is not yet truly effective. These difficulties cause some brands to struggle to find a direction for development after being granted intellectual property protection for geographical indications.
The workshop themed “Brand Value of Geographical Indication Products: Quang Tri Pepper, Quang Tri Bitter Tea, and Khe Sanh Coffee,” organized by the Department of Science and Technology, created a forum for academic and practical exchange among experts, managers, businesses, and producers. The workshop recorded many comprehensive assessments of the brand value of geographically indicated products in the province.
The opinions also highlighted the barriers and obstacles in the management and development of geographical indication product brands. In particular, experts and managers proposed specific and feasible solutions to enhance brand value, increase competitiveness, and expand markets – not only domestically but also for export.
According to Tran Ngoc Lan, Director of the Department of Science and Technology: To better develop the brand values that have been granted intellectual property protection, especially products with geographical indications, in the coming time, the Department of Science and Technology will continue to advise the Provincial People's Committee to issue specific mechanisms and policies, while supporting businesses and cooperatives in developing the intellectual property ecosystem in the locality; promoting the application of technology in agricultural production and processing. At the same time, it will strengthen the capacity to protect and exploit the value of geographical indications effectively and sustainably.
With the attention and guidance of Party committees and government at all levels, the support of experts, and especially the active cooperation and consensus from the business community, cooperatives, and farmers in the province, it is hoped that the province's key agricultural products, which have been granted intellectual property protection through geographical indications, will develop their brand value through fundamental and sustainable solutions.
