On August 20, the Air Defense - Air Force held the opening ceremony of the 2024 Air Search and Rescue Sports Festival.
On the morning of August 20, the Sports Festival took place at Air Force Regiment 916 (Air Force Division 371) to test the qualifications and capabilities of pilots and air search and rescue forces... 
This is also an opportunity to evaluate the strength, equipment, means, and organization of the implementation of air search and rescue missions of units in the Service when there is a situation, while at the same time propagating and educating soldiers to raise awareness of combat readiness and search and rescue missions. 
Immediately after the opening ceremony, the sports festival entered the practical competition with situations of flying to rescue victims. Each group and team performed the 300kg and 150kg lifting events on the Mi-171 SAR aircraft. 5 teams competed in the sports festival, including: Air Force Divisions 370, 371, 372; Air Force Officer School and National Center for Air Search and Rescue Training. 
The situation set by the organizers was that during a training and combat flight, the plane suddenly encountered an accident, the pilot was forced to parachute to ensure safety. The search and rescue plane quickly took off, determined the location of the pilot in distress and used equipment to retrieve the victim. 
With a single crane, the pilot will fly in the air, and the search and rescue team will use a 150kg crane to lower an officer or soldier into the water to rescue the victim. After that, the pilot in distress will be hoisted onto the plane. 
A 300kg crane, an officer and soldier were winched down to the water surface and then hoisted the pilot in distress onto the plane. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hoang, Deputy Political Commissar of Air Force Regiment 916, said that rescue flights are very difficult to perform because they require pilots and flight crews to have training, experience, and understanding of the terrain and weather. Previously, on August 19, the teams participating in the sports festival took the theory test.
