Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong passed away

NDO - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong, archaeologist, anthropologist and also a music composer, passed away at 10:00 a.m. on May 6 at the age of 85 after a period of fighting stomach cancer.

Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Lan Cuong was born in 1941, the fourth child in a family with a long tradition of studiousness, with many people passing exams, holding high academic titles and degrees, and holding important positions in many fields.

Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Lan Cuong is the son of the late People's Artist, Professor Nguyen Lan - a famous teacher and scholar. His siblings are also leading experts in many different fields, contributing to the family tradition, such as: Professor Nguyen Lan Dung, Professor Nguyen Lan Hung, musician Nguyen Lan Tuat...

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong studied Biology at Hanoi University of Science, then worked in the field of archaeology. He obtained his Associate Doctorate degree in 1994 and Associate Professor in 2002, and then worked at the Institute of Archaeology since 2003. He is considered one of the leading experts in paleoanthropology in Vietnam, devoting his life to researching the origin of humans in Vietnam.

He is the head of many national-level projects on research, restoration and repair of relics, especially the four famous preserved bodies of Vietnam at Dau Pagoda (Hanoi), Tieu Son ( Bac Ninh ) and Phat Tich (Bac Ninh)... He also held the position of General Secretary of the Vietnam Archaeological Association.

Not only is he a leading expert in archaeological science, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong is also a music composer. He studied music, composed and won a number of awards in the music field. His compositions are very rich, including choral works, songs for children, with nearly 100 works.

He has held many important positions in the art field, such as Permanent Vice President of the Hanoi Music Association and Head of the Inspection Committee of the Hanoi Literature and Arts Association.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong is the author of the book series "What do human bones tell us?" published in 2022. The book series is a collection of meticulous and elaborate research results on human bones from 1965 to 2018, including 400 drawings done by himself.

The book was awarded the 2024 National Book Award.
