On the afternoon of September 10th, hundreds of parents brought their children to Branch 2 of Trung Phuc Cuong 2 Primary School in Thien Nhan commune (Nghe An province) to request that the local authorities and the school reopen classes for their children to attend.
Keep your child home from school to protest the school merger.
This is the third consecutive day that hundreds of students in Thien Nhan commune have been absent from school due to parental protests against the merger of branch 2 (the outlying site) with branch 1 (the main site) of Trung Phuc Cuong 2 Primary School.
In a petition sent to the People's Committee of Nghe An province, the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An, the Thien Nhan commune government, and the school's management board, parents of primary school students at branch 2 (formerly Nam Phuc commune) expressed their concerns about sending their children to school.
"The road from the old Nam Phuc commune to branch 1 has a four-way intersection with many trucks, and traffic accidents frequently occur, so it poses many risks for the children passing through."
"We are worried about our children having to walk to school along this road," said Vo Dinh Dong, 75, who has two grandchildren attending primary school.
According to Mr. Dong, the children are still young and need to be taken to and from school by their parents or grandparents. However, the parents are working far away, and the elderly grandparents are too frail to take the children to and from school.
"Our wish is to keep this school building to ensure the safety of our children," Mr. Dong petitioned.

Mr. Duong Van Minh, 71 years old, residing in Dong Xuan hamlet, Thien Nhan commune, said that the villagers and parents are very upset about the local authorities' sudden transfer of children from the remote location to branch school 1 right before the start of the 2025-2026 school year, while the policy had not been discussed or approved in any village or hamlet meeting.
"We agree with the idea of creating a better learning environment for our children and grandchildren. However, the local authorities must conduct surveys and gather community opinions before making a decision. Every year we contribute to building increasingly modern school facilities, so why doesn't the commune keep the school?", Mr. Minh expressed.
Mr. Minh and many other parents said that before the new school year, the school only held a parent meeting for grades 1 to 5 at the satellite campus on August 24th, but no one agreed to the school merger.
Currently, the Trung Phuc Cuong 2 primary school branch in Quang Xa hamlet has a two-story school building with functional classrooms for music and computer science, an administrative building, and a playground for football and volleyball.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of September 10th, Ms. Le Thi Lan, Principal of Trung Phuc Cuong 2 Primary School, said that after the opening ceremony, many students at the remote school locations have been absent from school in recent days. Specifically, on the morning of September 10th, 136 out of 196 students were absent.
In the 2025-2026 school year, Trung Phuc Cuong 2 Primary School will have 19 classrooms with 670 students.
To prepare for the new school year, on August 16th, the school submitted a proposal to the People's Committee of Thien Nhan commune requesting permission to relocate the branch school to the main campus, as the main campus has complete and modern facilities, teaching equipment, and functional classrooms.
According to Ms. Lan, the distance between the two schools is only about 1km, which is convenient for students and teachers to travel to and from.
"The school has 29 teachers and staff members. If we split the teaching into two locations, we won't have enough time, teaching will be scattered, and the timetables will overlap," Ms. Lan said.

On August 29th, Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thien Nhan Commune, signed a notice agreeing to merge the smaller school branches into the main school, based on the conclusions of the Standing Committee of the Commune Party Committee. This aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning, concentrate investment, and effectively utilize resources so that students can study in a centralized environment with better equipment and facilities.
"We also listened to parents' concerns about the potentially dangerous intersection and proposed that the commune and higher authorities consider installing traffic lights and speed bumps to ensure the safety of the children," Ms. Lan shared.
During this time, the school administration of Trung Phuc Cuong 2 Primary School assigned teachers to visit each student's family to encourage them to bring their children back to school early to ensure the teaching and learning program is completed.
