Ea Wer commune women spread gender equality through grassroots media

In the last days of the year, the Tul A Community House is busier than usual. This is the 9th communication point in a series of communication activities, where women members and people can exchange and have frank dialogue on the topic "Eliminating gender prejudices, gender stereotypes and building a safe living environment for women and children".

Atmosphere of the media session   lively from the very ordinary stories of the people.

The reporter and the Standing Committee of the Commune Women's Union not only provided knowledge but also equipped women and children with self-protection and self-prevention skills against the risk of abuse; especially emphasizing risks in the online environment - an increasingly worrying issue in rural areas. Now, preventing abuse and gender-based violence is not only the responsibility of women but requires the coordinated participation of authorities, the community and men in the family.

Along with safety skills education , the program also encourages female members to access technology and boldly participate in digital transformation.

The persistent and long-lasting communication activities of the Women's Union over the past time have brought about clear changes. "Previously, men thought that housework and childcare were women's matters. But after being told many times, they understood that they are fathers, the pillars of the family, and must be responsible. Now many people participate, especially men in the village," said Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh, a member of the Ndrech village community communication team.

Not only does the program impact men, it also helps women re-evaluate their own roles. Ms. H'Bep Kala, a member of the women's association of Tul A village, shared: "When people hear about "gender equality", they think it is strange. But when told through stories in the village, everyone realizes that it is something close and familiar.   The media campaign provides a lot of knowledge, especially about safety on social networks. Therefore, whenever the program is organized, I try to attend. This is the third time I have participated."

Communication on eliminating gender prejudice, gender stereotypes and building a safe living environment for women and children of the Ea Wer Commune Women's Union is one of the key activities of Project 8 under the National Target Program on socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

The activity took place at 22 locations, attracting more than 1,100 people including women's union members, village and hamlet association executive committees, community communication team members, trusted addresses and local people to participate.

“1,100 participants will become 1,100 “propagandists” in their villages and hamlets. This is the necessary basis and effect to form the habit of fair and respectful behavior in the community” - Ms. Hoang Thi Ngoc Minh, President of the Ea Wer Women’s Union.

The goal of the communication program is to raise awareness, create equal development opportunities for men and women, change thinking and working methods, protect women and children; and respond to the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence (taking place from November 15 to December 15).

According to Ms. Hoang Thi Ngoc Minh, Chairwoman of the Commune Women’s Union, communication is the “key” to change. The Commune Women’s Union brings the message of eliminating gender prejudices, gender stereotypes and building a safe living environment for women and children to every village and hamlet in the most understandable and familiar way.

Women

Women's Union members of village 4 (Ea Wer commune) participate in activities at the village's Great Unity Day.

Ea Wer Commune has 34 Women's Unions, including 6 Women's Unions of local ethnic minorities. Communication activities on gender equality in recent times have created visible changes in each family and each residential area.

Women in villages and hamlets are increasingly bold in speaking up in family decisions; children, especially girls, receive more attention from their families in terms of education and safety; many women confidently participate in community activities, savings and loan groups, self-managed security groups, etc. The good news is that men have gradually changed their way of thinking, willing to share housework, take care of children, and accompany their wives in village and hamlet meetings.

The communication campaign at 22 locations is the way that the Ea Wer Commune Women's Union proactively concretizes major policies on gender equality in appropriate forms, such as: communication by village clusters, small group activities, integration in Party cell and Self-management Board meetings, or taking advantage of prestigious people to spread the message.

Thanks to the participation of Party committees, authorities and core forces at the grassroots level, these activities are and will open up a safer, more equal and humane living environment for women and children in Ea Wer commune.
