With its special geographical location, Phu Quy is considered a "solid rear base" and a "strategic link" in protecting Vietnam's sovereignty over its sea and islands.
National sovereignty is a sacred and inviolable concept for any country in the world. For Vietnam, with a coastline of more than 3,200 km and thousands of large and small islands stretching from North to South, each island and archipelago plays a strategic role not only in terms of defense and security but also in terms of economy , culture and society.
Steel Shield
In the general picture of Vietnam's sea and island sovereignty, Phu Quy Island in Binh Thuan province - the outpost island of the Fatherland, plays a great role in affirming and protecting the inviolable sea and island sovereignty.
Phu Quy is an island district, located about 56 nautical miles (about 104 km) from the mainland of Binh Thuan province. Phu Quy Island is not just a single island but an archipelago of 12 large and small islands with a total area of nearly 17.82 km². This is one of the island systems located in the South Central Coast of Vietnam. The name "Phu Quy" not only means wealth and prosperity but also shows the respect and strategic value of this island in history as well as in the present.
The staff and workers of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital returned to Phu Quy Island.
With its special geographical location, Phu Quy is considered a "solid rear base" and a "strategic link" in protecting Vietnam's sovereignty over its seas and islands. As a gateway connecting Binh Thuan sea area with Truong Sa archipelago and DK1 platform, this is not only a shield protecting the mainland from threats from the sea but also plays a very important role in Vietnam's security, defense and economy.
The armed forces stationed on Phu Quy Island are assigned important tasks: strictly maintaining the regime of stationing meetings, guarding and combat training. They are always in a state of combat readiness, firmly protecting the airspace and sea, and actively participating in search, rescue and salvage activities. This not only ensures security and order on the island but also contributes to maintaining national sovereignty, against potential challenges and threats from outside forces.
In particular, in the context of the increasingly complicated situation in the East Sea, maintaining the regular presence of armed forces in Phu Quy is a key factor to affirm and protect territorial sovereignty, while creating peace of mind for fishermen going out to sea.
Army and people united
Not only valuable for national defense and security, Phu Quy Island is also an important link in the development of Vietnam's marine economy.
With its port system and favorable location, Phu Quy Island is a transit center for goods and raw materials between the mainland and offshore islands. It is also a "floating base" serving fishermen in offshore fishing. Hundreds of fishing boats from the Central and Southern provinces have chosen Phu Quy as a place to refuel, maintain and rest after their trips at sea.

Phu Quy is also a place that focuses on developing aquaculture, especially grouper and lobster - products with high economic value. In recent years, Phu Quy has gradually become a potential tourist destination, attracting visitors with its wild beauty, cool blue beaches and cultural and historical relics such as Linh Son Pagoda, Thanh Lam Pagoda, and Phu Quy Lighthouse.
Another important role of Phu Quy Island is as a search and rescue center at sea. The waters around Phu Quy are frequently used by fishermen, but are also prone to incidents due to bad weather, storms, or accidents at sea. Thanks to its proximity to major shipping routes and fishing grounds, the search and rescue force in Phu Quy is always ready to support and ensure the safety of fishermen and vessels operating in the area.
This center is not only a support for fishermen but also a clear demonstration of the State’s presence and responsibility in protecting people’s lives and property at sea. This is also a strong affirmation that all socio-economic activities on the islands are protected under the protection of the nation.
In addition to the presence of armed forces, the people of Phu Quy Island also play an important role in protecting the sovereignty of the islands. With a spirit of patriotism and a clear sense of national sovereignty, the local government, army and people of Phu Quy always unite to maintain security and order on the island, protect aquatic resources, and participate in propaganda activities to raise awareness of the islands.
The armed forces on the island regularly organize training sessions, not only for the army but also for fishermen, to equip them with knowledge and skills to deal with emergency situations. Defense and rescue drills are also held regularly, creating a close connection between the army and the people.
As the outpost island of the Fatherland, Phu Quy has always received investment attention from the Party and the State. Taking the marine economy and tourism as a breakthrough development, Phu Quy is expected to develop strongly as the name of the island has a very important role in the strategy of protecting national sovereignty at sea.
In the context of Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty always facing many challenges, preserving and promoting the value of islands like Phu Quy is the responsibility of the whole nation. With close coordination between the armed forces and the people, along with investment in economic development, Phu Quy will continue to be a steel shield, affirming sovereignty and protecting the sacred territorial integrity of the Fatherland.
