Reading the speech at the ceremony, Comrade Nguyen Quoc Thang - Secretary of Phu Quy District Party Committee reviewed the glorious tradition of the Party Committee, government and people of the island district. The great victory in the spring of 1975 is a heroic page in the great history of building and defending the country of our people. During the resistance war against the US to save the country, the people on the island remained wholeheartedly devoted to the revolution, believing in the victory of the national liberation cause led by the Party. There have been many generations of islanders, following the sacred call of the Fatherland, finding every way to cross the ocean, voluntarily escaping to localities and revolutionary bases on the mainland to participate in the resistance war against foreign invaders, with the desire to contribute to the revolutionary cause of the nation, liberating the country, liberating the homeland, unifying the country... Implementing the direction of the Binh Thuan Provincial Party Committee and the superior military command, the 125th Naval Division and the 95th Regiment, in coordination with the 482nd Binh Thuan Battalion, the 490th Company and the Tuy Phong District Civil Affairs Party Cadres Delegation set out to carry out the mission of liberating the island. At around 24:00 on April 26, on the way to liberate the island, the troops encountered enemy ships blocking the way. The liberation troops promptly deployed their combat formation to fight the enemy and clear the way to continue advancing to the island.
At 3:00 a.m. on April 27, 1975, our troops secretly approached the island and deployed attack forces against the enemy. At exactly 5:00 a.m. on April 27, all four attack forces simultaneously opened fire on the enemy. Being attacked by surprise, the enemy troops on the island were confused and fled in all directions. After more than 1 hour of fierce fighting, our troops crushed all enemy resistance. At dawn on April 27, 1975, all over the roads and residential areas on the island, the colors of the national flag and the liberation flag fluttered in the wind on Phu Quy Island, the last land of Binh Thuan Province and the battlefield of Zone VI to be completely liberated.
Over 50 years of liberation (April 27, 1975 - April 27, 2025), under the leadership of the District Party Committee and the consensus of the people, the attention and support of the Central Government and the Province, Phu Quy island district has achieved many important achievements of profound revolutionary significance in the cause of socio-economic development, national construction and defense. The district's economy has stabilized and is constantly developing in a sustainable direction. The marine economy is still identified as a key economic sector, a breakthrough of the district and is focused on investment for rapid, strong and sustainable development. The system of infrastructure and key projects has been and is continuing to be invested in, built, upgraded, completed and put into operation, serving socio-economic development, security and defense. Road and sea transport, trade and services, electricity supply, and communications to serve the needs of people's daily life, study, production and business have been expanded, creating favorable conditions and driving forces for the socio-economic development of the district. The work of hunger eradication, poverty reduction, caring for the lives of policy families, social beneficiaries, vocational training, job creation for workers, child protection activities, prevention of social evils and military rear work associated with patriotic emulation movements... has always been of interest to local authorities and sectors and implemented synchronously, achieving many results. With the achievements in the fields of people's life development, socio-economic development of the district in the past 50 years, Phu Quy island district has had great changes, increasingly prosperous, and the quality of people's lives has been improved.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hong Hai congratulated, acknowledged and commended the achievements that the Party Committee, government, army and people of Phu Quy district have achieved in the 50-year journey of construction and development. The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee emphasized: The 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Phu Quy district is an opportunity for us to review the history, glorious traditions and achievements of the Party Committee, government and people. Thereby, arousing national pride, self-esteem, enhancing love for the homeland, country, love for socialism, indomitable will, self-reliance, self-reliance to overcome all difficulties and challenges. In the past time, the Central and provincial leaders have always paid attention to Phu Quy island district - a frontier land, with a very important strategic position in terms of national defense and security of the province. Currently, implementing the Party and State's policy on the arrangement of administrative units and the construction of a 2-level local government model, Phu Quy will be organized into a Special Zone on the basis of merging the 3 current commune-level administrative units. The role, functions and tasks of the Party Committee and the Special Zone's government will be innovated. However, the strategic role and position in terms of national defense and security and the main tasks of building and developing Phu Quy will still be maintained, inherited and continued. At the same time, strengthening measures to consolidate national defense and security, maintaining political security and ensuring social order and safety. comprehensively developing Phu Quy in the direction of developing the marine economy, developing eco-tourism and island tourism; closely combining economic development with ensuring national defense, being a solid rear base for the Truong Sa archipelago; gradually improving the material and spiritual life of the people on the island. Strengthen the work of building a clean and strong Party and political system, well implement the Central's policy on arranging, streamlining the apparatus, reorganizing administrative units at all levels according to the Central's direction, Phu Quy according to the special economic zone government model. Focus on developing education and health care for the people. Promote the movement of joining hands and hearts to build new rural areas. Do better the movement of gratitude, poverty reduction, strive to have no more poor households; care for the families of martyrs, war invalids, families with meritorious services to the revolution, poor households, families in difficult circumstances; effectively implement social security policies.
