Restoration of Nguyen Dynasty Throne: Returning to original state in 2015, ensuring the spirit of national treasure

(GLO)-The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) has just issued an official document giving comments on the plan to restore the Nguyen Dynasty throne, a national treasure that was vandalized in May 2025 at Thai Hoa Palace, requesting that it be restored to its "most similar" state compared to 2015, the time the artifact was recorded for recognition.

In the document signed by Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong and sent to the People's Committee of Hue City, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism clearly stated: The restoration must take the year 2015 as the basis, when the dossier to recognize the throne as a national treasure is built and assessed.

The Ministry emphasized that the restoration results must ensure maximum reproduction of form, material, color and manufacturing techniques, ensuring high scientific accuracy, and compatibility with photos, drawings, and technical records in the original records.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requires that the restoration plan must strictly comply with the 2024 revised Law on Cultural Heritage, which emphasizes the principle of preserving the originality and history of artifacts. The application of new techniques, materials and technologies is only allowed when absolutely necessary, has a clear scientific basis and does not change the nature of the artifacts.

Professional agencies need to make the most of the original fragments and details that remain after the vandalism, instead of completely rebuilding.

Regarding the professional and supervisory council, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism suggests that, in addition to the list of members, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hue City should advise the People's Committee of Hue City to clearly define the duties and powers of the council.

The Ministry also noted the need to clearly define the functions, tasks and powers of the restoration professional council. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hue City will be the unit advising on its establishment, ensuring the participation of conservation experts, traditional fine arts experts, and historians.

The restoration process must be monitored throughout, with acceptance records for each stage, and transparency must be ensured at every stage.

Previously, on May 24, 2025, a tourist climbed up and vandalized the Nguyen Dynasty throne while visiting Thai Hoa Palace (Hue Imperial City). The artifact was severely damaged. After the incident, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province (formerly) established a council to assess the situation and make an urgent restoration plan.

The restoration of the Nguyen Dynasty throne is not only a technical effort but also a commitment to preserving heritage according to international standards, demonstrating the responsibility to preserve Vietnamese culture to the public at home and abroad.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism affirmed that it will continue to accompany and closely monitor so that the national treasure can soon be returned to its solemn position in the Thai Hoa Palace space.
